In high school, he was a member of the basketball team, winner of the Class B title at the Tech Tourney; a member of the National Honor Society and of De Molay. He was also quite active in youth activities at the Belmont Methodist Church where he was a member of Questers and served in the Senior Department of the Sunday School.⁴

After high school Jim attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he also played basketball and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He graduated from Cornell with a degree in Hotel Management.¹

After college, Jim served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. After that, he was a textile and apparel sales representative in the Chicago and Midwest market area, working side by side with his cousin and best freiend, Wndell Slayton. In later years, their business shifted to the sale of salt products.¹

Jim and Connie retured to the Sugar Mill Golf Community in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where they enjoyed golf, travel, and their friends. They continued to be active members in the Lutheran Church. Their Chicago Church was Grace Lutheran Missouri Synod in Western Springs, Illinois and their New Smyrna church was Trinity Lutheran Church.¹

James died on 18 March 2018 in Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia, Edgewater, Volusia County, Florida, at age 87. His remains were cremated in the Trinity Crematory,in Daytona Beach, Florida and were distributed in several locations that were important in his life..^1,2

Jim was an entrepreneur, who owned and operated Arrow Machine in Hutchinson for 25 years. He invented a hydraulic boat motor lift which he manufactured and sold around the world. After selling that business, Jim built Pamico, Inc. in Burrton. He worked until his illness took his strength. He also had an interest in Hidden Village Condominium and was a partner in Americo, Inc (oil).

Jim was a big supporter of Burrton. He was raised there by (in his opinion) the best parents. He loved his childhood and wanted to give back to Burrton. He donated a building for the Senior Center (J.C. "Cliff" and Ruth Dole Senior Center) and a building with furnishings for the Ruth Dole Memorial Library and a park in their names. Jim also donated to many charities.^4,2 James was divorced from Lola Jean Castleman in 1980 at Kansas.⁶

As of 1987, James Robert Dole lived at RR 3, POB 72, Willowbrook, Reno County, Kansas.⁷ By 1988, he had moved to PO Box 476, Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas.⁷

After her divorce and retirement from teaching in 1983, Shirley moved back to Hutchinson. She was active in church work at Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church and volunteering through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Her hobbies included reading and playing bridge, but her passion was inventive sewing.³

In 1998, Shirley owned the W1/2 SE1/4 S32 T23N R4W of 6th PM at Valley Township, Reno County, Kansas.¹⁰

Shirley died on 3 December 2019 in Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, at age 101.³
