Mel graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1963 and from Washburn University Law School, Topeka, in 1971. A Buhler resident since 1985, moving there from Hutinson, he became an assistant Reno County Attorney in 1974 and later went into private practice. He was a member of Kansas Bar Ass'n. and an avid snow skier who went skiing every year in Colorado with Reno County District Judge Steven Becker.
Melvin was a member of the Park Place Christian Church, the Salt City Bowling League, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No.68, and had been active in the NJCAA Basketball Tournament since 1978, serving as tournament team host chairman, all in Hutchinson, was a member of the Kansas State and Reno County Bar Assoviations, the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity at K-State and Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity at Washburn University. He served in the US Air Force.2
He died at home in Buhler, Kansas after a yearlong battle with cancer. Memorial service was at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson..2
