Richard Pettengill

FatherRichard Pettingill b. c 1596
     Richard Pettengill was born circa 1620 in England.1 Richard was a resident of Salem before 1641. He became a freeman on 2 June 1641. Richard received a grant of 10 acres of land in "Enon" (Wenham) in 1642 and resided there for several years. He sold the house and land to Samuel Forster and bought a tract in the plantation of Newbury on 8 April 1651. There he made a home on the high road in "Upper Green" (part of home was still standing in 1900). He obtained 14 acres of marsh from the town in 1651 in exchange for a right-of-way for what is now Ocean Ave. He was chosen as a grand juryman in 1661. He was granted an island in Plum Island River in 1665 and chosen on a jury in Ipswich in 1671. He conveyed properties to his sons Samuel, Matthew, & Nathaniel on 15 July 1695 and died shortly thereafter.2

Richard married Joanna Ingersoll circa 1643/44. Richard and Joanna had 6 children and perhaps more.2,3
