Sarah Wentworth was born circa 1648 in Canterbury, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Wentworth, a descendant of the Wentworth-Woodhouse families of England..1,2

Sarah married Daniel Matheny in 1665.3,4,5 On June 10, 1691, Sarah and her son, William, were sued by her daughter Susannah, formerly wife of Solomon Day and now wife of John Davis, to obtain her dower rights to the Hope property jointly purchased by Sarah's husband, Daniel Matheny, and by Susannah's first husband, Solomon Day.

On October 9, 1691, the Court ruled in favor of John Davis, husband of Susanna, confirming his right to the land purchased by Solomon Day during the rest of Sisanna's life.

In February 1691/92, Sarah sued her son William to obtain her dower right to land purchased by her husband, Daniel. The court so ordered.

In another court case held on 25 February and 10 March, 1691/2, Sarah and son William were said to have locked a room in an apparently abandoned manor house on land in the possession of George Brent who obtained it from Susannah Davis, the late widow of Solomon Day. Sarah and William refused to allow Joseph Eyres, a tenant of George Brent, to enter the room. The court ordered Sarah to let Joseph in the room and to pay court costs.

In susequent court cases, William Matheny petitioned that he was the real owner of the land. His petition was denied; he appealed, and the appeal was refused. The case then went to the colony's Governor & Council who ruled that Brent was entitled to possession of the land.6

Thomas Waite was born in 1601 in England.1,2

Thomas married Eleanor [--?--] Waite in 1636?. The name "Waite" is said to have come from the German "wacht", signifying watch, and was applied to a watchman and later to minstrels in England. There is a great variety of spelling in the early records, such as Wayt, Waiet, Weight, Wayte, Wayghte, Waighte, and Waite. For many years the Christmas Waits had certain rights in London, which were purchased from the proper officials and were protected against infringement within their special territory.

The earliest known of the name was Ralph de Waiet. In 1315, Ricardus le Wayte of County Warwick, England, was escheator of Berks, Wilts, Oxford, Bedford, and Bucks counties. His descendants continued to spell the name this way and it wasn't until they came to America that it was spelled with an i. The family was numerous in Southern England and North Wales.

Thomas Waite, with his brothers, arrived at Plymouth, Mass. and settled in Portsmouth, RI (then called Pocasset) in 1638. There is a family tradition that the three brothers had been set upon by a press gang while tending their cattle in England. After fighting off the press gang, they sold the cattle and immediately took passage for America.

Thomas had a house lot in Portsmouth 1 July 1639 and was made freeman in Newport 16 March 1641. He was also made freeman in Boston 8 October 1640. On 3 April 1661, he bought land at Acushnet and Cohasset, Mss. and was spoken of as a husbandman.2

Thomas died after 1677 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island.1,2
