Benjamin Waite

     Benjamin Waite was born in 1644 at Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1

Benjamin married Martha Leonard on 8 June 1670 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Martha and Sergeant Benjamin Waite had 8 children, including a son, also Sergeant Benjamin Waite who was also in the fight at Deerfield in which his father was killed. Sergeant Benjamin, the son, married Mary Belden and had 10 children..2,3 Benjamin was a brave fearless guide and leader of scouts, was well versed in Indian warfare, and excelled in his ability to cope with the Indians in cunning.3

Benjamin died on 29 February 1703/4 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. In the battle for Deerfield, the Indians were driven from the field, but were reinforced by the French who in turn drove the Americans back. Sergeant Benjamin Waite fell in the retreat and his body was stripped and mutilated. He is buried in the Deerfield Cemetery..3
