Alexander Carpenter

M, b. circa 1560
Alexander Carpenter was born circa 1560.1

Alexander was in the ninth generation from the original John Carpenter. His father's name was William. He had a brother, also named William (included in Book IX of Helen Kluegel's Prince Family series).

Alexander was a man of wealth and standing. The name of his wife is not known. The Carpenter family belonged to Wrington, about 8 miles from Bristol, Somersetshire, England. They first lived at Bathe where their first daughter was born,

Alexander was a dissenter, and account of religious persecution removed with his family to Leyden, Holland. He had early crossed from the West of England, from Wrington near Bath, to join the Ancient Brethren, He was living in Leyden as early as 1611. He may have returned to England, as did Southworth and his wife Alice Carpenter and Morton and his wife Juliana Carpenter, who were all living in London.

William of Cobham was. without doubt, the son of Alexander. This William was made a squire and given the title of Gentleman and the grant of a Coat of Arms. He was without heirs.

Alexander had six daughters. Five came to New England. Four of the daughters were baptized at Wrington Rectory, Bristol, Somersetshire. They seem to have change their baptismal names.

Alexander's daughters were extraordinary. Four of these sisters left the impress of sterling characters upon the descendants of Bradford, Morton, Fuller, And Wright, many of whom have seen men of note and ability.1
