William is identified as the Lord of the Manor of Barkham. Barkham, anciently "Beorcham", was noted as the spot where William the Conqueror paused on his devastating march from the bloody field of Hastings, as the old chronicle tells us "wasting the land, burning the towns, and sleaing (sic) the people til he came to Beorcham", whose beauty nestled among the green hills of Berkshire, perhaps it was that sayed his ruthless hand.2
