Mildred Janet Sittser

F, b. 21 November 1901, d. 8 March 1999
     Mildred was born on a farm in Brutus, Cayuga, NY. He father, Willis Sydney Sittser, died on her 11th birthday. He mother, Mary or Mate as she was called, sold the farm. They moved to Weedsport where they (Mary, Mildred and sister Marian) lived with Mary's parents. Mildred graduated from Weedsport High School and taught school for about two years.

Her mother took a job as cook at the DKE House at Syracuse University. Mildred attended while living at the DKE House. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and graduated in June, 1923 from the College of Liberal Arts.

Upon graduation she took a job teaching Latin in Monticello, New York. When she married Oscar John Olsen in 1926, it was necessary to resign. At that time married women were not allowed to be teachers.

Upon marriage, she moved to Union, New Jersey. In 1930's she began substituting in the public schools for $5.00 per diem. In 1940 Mildred returned to teaching permanently. She was given the job because the district did not have a teacher certified to teach the mentally retarded and therefore could hire a married teacher. She went to Newark State Teachers College (now Kane College, Union) to become certified.
Mildred Janet Sittser was born on 21 November 1901 in Willis S. Sittser Farm.1

Mildred appeared in the New York Census of 1905 in the household of her grandfather, Willis S Sittser, in Brutus, Cayuga County. She was 3. Included in the household were her 2 sisters, Belle C (16) and Ethel S (12); and hergrandmother, Emily J Sittser (74).2

Mildred appeared in the census of 1910 in the household of her father, Willis Sittser, at Brutus, Cayuga County, New York. She was 8, born in New York. Included in the household were her mother, Mate (42, NY), a sister, Marion (2, NY). and her grandmother, Emily J (79, NY).3

Mildred appeared in the census of 1920 in the household of her grandfather, Samuel Passage, at Brutus, Cayuga County, New York. She was 18, born in New York, and working as a school teacher.4

Mildred was listed as the head of household in the 1925 New York State Census in Sullivan, Thompson County. She was 23, born in United States, and listed as a school teacher. She was living alone in the household.5

Mildred married Oscar John Olsen on 2 April 1926 in Parsonage, Monticello, Sullivan County, New York, Presbyterian.6

Mildred appeared in the census of 1930 in the household of her father-in-law, John Olsen, at Union, Union County, New Jersey. She was 28, born in New York.7

Mildred appeared in the census of 1940 in the household of her husband Oscar John Olsen at Union, Union County, New Jersey. She was 38, born in Weedsport, New York.8

Mildred died on 8 March 1999 in Sykesville, Carroll County, Maryland, at age 97.9 She was buried in the Weedsport Rural Cemetery at Weedsport, Cayuga County, New York.10

Oscar John Olsen was born on 5 March 1901 at home at 854 Bushwick Ave., Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He was the only child of John Olsen from Sweden and Louise(a) Stachelroth who was born in New York City..1

Oscar appeared in the census of 1910 in the household of his father, John Olsen, at Bayonne Ward 3, Hudson County, New Jersey. He was 9, born in New York.2

Oscar attended vocational school to become a machinist.

Records in our possession show he enlisted at age 17 on 3 Oct., 1918 for two years in the N.Y.G. After completion of enlistment we was granted an honorable discharge with the rank of Private, first class of Co "C" 1st Bn., Signal Corps., N.Y.G. Discharge papers show brown eyes, brown hair, 5 ft 8 1/4" in height, and excellent character.

Apparently from 1920 at the end of this enlistment he was at sea as a machinist mate for various shipping companies as well as on tankers for Gulf Oil. When his mother became ill he left the sea.

He was employed as a machinist by several companies, amoung them, American Can. With his father, John Olsen, he operated a service station at 1767 Morris Ave., Union, NJ (about 1926-19??). Before retiring he operated a custom machine shop where enginers brought designs which he then machined.

Although he left the sea as a vocation his heart was always there. He loved to fish and spend time on the water. This love was passed on to his children, Mary Lou and John, who enjoyed time on the "FOUROFUS" and the "O2".

Oscar appeared in the census of 1920 in the household of his father, John Olsen, at Bayonne Ward 3, Hudson County, New Jersey. He was 18, born in New York.3

Oscar received a Seaman's Certificate of American citizenship on 3 January 1921. He was 19 and living at 26 West 35th St., Bayonne, New Jersey. His citizenship was confirmed by a baptism certificate from the First Church Luthern of Brooklyn, New York, William Diehi, Pastor.4

Oscar married Mildred Janet Sittser on 2 April 1926 in Parsonage, Monticello, Sullivan County, New York, Presbyterian.5

Oscar appeared in the census of 1930 in the household of his father, John Olsen, at Union, Union County, New Jersey. He was 29, born in New York, and listed as the manager of a service station.6

Oscar applied for a Seaman's Protection Certificate on 6 August 1935 in New York, New York. At the time he was living in Ozone Park, Long Island, New York. He had served as a waiter in his last ship, the US A.T. Kilpatrick.7

Oscar was listed as the head of household in the 1940 Census in Union, Union County, New Jersey. He was 39, born in Brooklyn, New York, and listed as a machinist. Included in the household were his wife, Mildred J (38, Weedsport, NY); a daughter, Mary L (12, Bayonne, NJ); and a son (John S (6, Albany NY).8

Oscar died on 26 November 1977 at age 76. From Lou 1/2/02. Died at Forked River.

     Edna Minnie Wright was born on 11 July 1896 in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. Her parents were William "Lee" Wright and Della Eugenia Hatmaker..1,2

Edna appeared in the census of 1910 in the household of her father an unknown person at East St Louis Ward 6, Saint Clair County, Illinois. She was 14, born in Tennessee.3 She married Otto Thomas Drake, son of Lucinda Catherine Drake, on 4 April 1914 at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.4

     Otto Thomas Drake was born on 17 September 1881. Various documents say Otto was born in Terre Haute, IN or Decatur, IL.1,2,3

Otto appeared in the census of 1900 in the household of his stepfather Lee Connell at District 0229, St Louis Ward 15, St Louis (independent city), Missouri. He was 18, born in Illinois, and was employed as a bartender.1 Otto Thomas Drake married Edna Minnie Wright on 4 April 1914 at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.4

Otto registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at East St Louis City, St Clair, Illinois. He was listed as a clerk in the United State Food Administration in St Louis.5

Another daughter, Kathryn's name was crossed off on the census as an error or misunderstanding.8

Otto died on 25 January 1955 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 73.3
