Several versions of the immediate ancestry of Ensign James Matheny (1753-1832) have been published in book form and online. Most, if not all, of them trace his ancestry back to Daniel Matheny (1638-1689) and Susan Wentworth. This narrative follows the family line from Daniel to Ensign James as published in "Matheny-Gucciardo and Allied Families" by Dolores (Matheny) Gucciardo with some excerpts from "The Two Brothers of the Hope Land - The Early History of the Matheny Family" by Bob Metheny. James Matheny was born on 18 March 1753 at Hope Plantation, Stafford County, Virginia.2,3
James married Mary Lamayne on 8 September 1771 at Aquia Episcopal Church, Overwharton, Stafford County, Virginia. The ceremony was performed by Elder James Lawthorp..4,5,3
James was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was a private in the 1st Co., 5th Regiment. In May 1783, he was commissioned Ensign in Capt. Andrew Farley's Co., 2nd Battalion, Washington County Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Col. Henry Enock. His brother Nathaniel served in the same company.
James and his wife Mary moved to Beech Run Hill where they purchased 400 acres of land for $100 in 1798.6
James was listed as the head of household in the 45 & over age group in the 1820 Census at Preston, Virginia. Included in the household were 1 female over 45, presumably his wife Mary, 1 male 26-44, and 1 female 10-16..7
James was listed as the head of household in the 70-79 age group in the 1830 Census at Preston, Henry County, Virginia. Included in the household was 1 female 70-79, presumably his wife, Mary, and 1 femail 30-39..8
James died on 10 April 1832 at Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia), at age 79.9,5,3 He was buried in Cheat Hill Cemetery at Preston County, Virginia.3
