Samuel Chadd

M, b. 1789
FatherSamuel Chadd b. 15 Dec 1754, d. c 1833
Samuel Chadd was born about 1789.1 Samuel married Polly Chadrick on 23 July 1809 at Bourbon County, Kentucky. John Chadrick (Polly's father?) was bondman at the marriage. Per the 1830 Census, Samuel and Polly had at least 3 sons and 2 daughters..2
Samuel was listed as the head of a family in the 40-50 age group on the 1810 Census at Bourbon County. Included in the household were 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26 (Samuel), and 1 female 26-45 (presumably Polly)..3
Samuel served in the War of 1812 as a Private in the Kentucky Militia. He was enlisted in Capt. Thomas Morris' Company, Scott's Regt, Kentucky Militia as a private from 15 August 1812 to 15 October 1812. He was enlisted in Capt. Memorial Forrest's Company, Kentucky Volunteer Militia as a private from 10 September 1814 to 9 October 1814.4
Samuel was listed as the head of a family in the 26-45 age group on the 1820 Census at Harrison County, Kentucky. Included in the household were 1 female over 45, possibly his wife Polly (although the age seems too great); 1 male 10-16; and 2 females under 10.5
Samuel served on a grand jury panel in the Circuit Court on 5 May 1825 at Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana.6
Samuel was listed as the head of family in the 40-50 age group on the 1830 Census at Putnam County, Indiana. Included in the household were 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 40-50 (Samuel), 2 females 15-20, and 1 female 50-60 (presumably his wife Polly)..7
An anecdote read to the Putnam County Historical Society in 1895 concerned Thomas Jackson, born in Bourbon Co., KY in 1798. When he moved to Putnam County, it was an unbroken wilderness. One of his neighbors was Samuel Chadd and together they planted and cultivated a crop of corn, exchanging work. Mr. Jackson - or Uncle Tommy as he was generally known - did the plowing and Chadd manipulated the hoe. The harness and plow were of the most primitive type, the former simply a shuck collar with linn tugs, and the plow of the usual mold-board variety. The linn bark - that is, the inner bark of the linden tree - from which tug, straps, strings, and thongs were made, was first soaked in a neighboring "branch" until it became soft and pliant, when it was doubled and twisted into various sizes according to the use for which it was intended. It was also used for bed cords, well-sweeps, and plow lines. It is also safe to infer that four or five feet of the larger size was occasionally used judiciously and with apparent profit in disciplining an indolent or refractory plow-boy.8

Jane is mentioned in the will of her mother, Mary Hutcherson, dated 11 February 1807, in which she received 3 slaves and half of the sale price of another.2

Jane married William Kinsler on 20 December 1804 in Harrison County, Kentucky.3 She married William Stears on on 14 April 1808 at Harrison County, Kentucky. After their marriage, William and Jane relocated to Grant Co., Kentucky. They had at least 2 children, including:
- John Stears. Married Jane Frakes in 1834, Grant Co., Kentucky;

Elizabeth Kinsler

F, b. circa 1783
FatherJames Kinsler (Sr) b. 1760?
MotherJane [--?--] Kinsler b. 1762?, d. b May 1830?
     Elizabeth was born circa 1783.1
Elizabeth married Joseph Lake on 14 November 1805 at Harrison County, Kentucky.2
Elizabeth together with other heirs of James Kinsler, signed a deed to sell an interest in 40 acres of land on Mill Creek, Harrison County, KY for $1 on 7 May 1830. An Elizabeth Kinsler signed this land transaction in 1830, together with all of the heirs of Jane Kinsler, widow of James Kinsler (Sr), although she is not listed as an heir in the deed itself. The same land transaction was signed by William & Ann Lake, listed in the deed as heirs of James Kinsler. William and Ann are almost certainly the children of Elizabeth Kinsler, daughter of James & Jane Kinsler, and Joseph Lake. If the Elizabeth Kinsler who signed the deed is the same person, she must have divorced Joseph Lake and reverted to her maiden name. Otherwise, she may have been the daughter of William Kinsler, James' brother, but this would not explain why she was involved in a deed with all of James' heirs..3

Joseph Lake was born in 1785?.1

Joseph married Elizabeth Kinsler on 14 November 1805 in Harrison County, Kentucky.2 It appears that Joseph and Elizabeth had at least two children; Ann Lake and William Lake. Ann Lake married John Massey some time before May 1830 when they and William are included in a land transaction as heirs of James Kinsler. Per Kentucky Marriages to 1850, Ann and John were married on 12 December 1816 in Harrison County, KY.3

James Leamon

M, b. before 1766, d. 1827
James Leamon was born before 1766 at Scotland.1

James Leamon was a British soldier from Scotland who served in the 16th Light Dragoons during the Revolution (he is described as a Scotsman - British Army, Revolutionary War on his wife Rebecca's grave stone). He was captured in the Battle of Trenton by Corporal William Wallar of Moses Rawling's Maryland & Virgina Rifle Regiment (11th Regiment, 9th Company of the Continental Virginia Line). He was apparently listed as a prisoner at Lancaster, Pennsylvania in September 1777. By some accounts, he was exchanged but then deserted the British Army and went to the home of William Wallar in Berkley Co. VA ( now in Jefferson Co. WVA) between Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry. They became life long friends and lived as neighbors and moved together with their families to Preston Co. VA and again to Guernsey Co., Ohio. Four of their children intermarried. William Leamon married Leanner Wallar and Elisha Waller married Jane Leamon.

James probably moved from Virginia to Guernsey County, Ohio with the Wallar family between 1807 (when son James Jr. was born in VA) and 1819 (when daughter Jane was married in Guernsey County). No Leamon's are shown in the 1810 Tax List for Ohio and no Leamons's are shown in Guernsey County in 1812 so it is likely that the move to Ohio was after that or they did not go directly to the Guernsey area.

Although not found in the 1820 Census in Guernsey County, James is on record as owning land in Westland Twp., Guernsey County, Ohio in 1818 (probably), 1819 (probably), 1825, 1826, and 1827. He is listed with personal property in 1826 and 1827. At the time his will was drafted, he owned 80 acres in the W1/2 NE1/4 S20 Twp I Rge IV in Westland Twp.2,3

James married Rebecca Matheny circa 1792 at Monongalia County, Virginia.4

James was listed as the head of household in the 26-44 age group in the 1810 Census at Monongalia County, Virginia. Included in the household were 2 males under 10, probably his sons Reuben and James ; 1 son 10-15, probably his son William; 1 female under 10, probably his daughter Jane or Rebecca; and 1 female 26-44, probably his wife Rebecca. One daughter in the under 10 age group appears to be missing..5

Sims Index of West Virginia Land Grants lists a James Leamon with 300 acres adjacent to Daniel Sovern. It also lists a John Leamon with 200 acres adjacent to David Lane in 1796 (Book 5, page 8) but our John Leamon was only 3 years old at the time so it is very doubtful that this land was his.6

James was listed as the head of household in the over 45 age group in the 7 August 1820 Census at Westland, Guernsey County, Ohio. Included in the household were 1 male and 2 females under 10, presumably Benjamin, Lydia, and Mary; 1 male and 2 females 10-15, presumably James, Rebecca and Jane?; 1 male 16-18; 2 males 16-25, presumably William and Reuben; and 1 female over 45, presumably his wife Rebecca..7

James made a will on 30 July 1827 at Westland, Guernsey County, Ohio.. The will was witnessed by William Wallar Jr. and David Coulter. It was certified and recorded on 14 August 1827, implying that James must have died immediately after making his will.

The will left his 80 acre plantation in Guernsey County to his wife Rebecca and, after her death, to his sons, James and Benjamin. Some property was left to the two sons and to his two daughters, Lydia and Mary.

Included in the will was a waiver of rights signed by John, William, and Reuben Leamon (sons not included in will); and by George & Elizabeth Hartman, Elisha & Jane Wallar, and Jacob & Rebecca Watson (daughters not included in will and their husbands)..8

James died in 1827 at Westland, Guernsey County, Ohio.8

Several Ancestry Family Trees list his birth as 1766 based on US and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900. But he was captured in the Battle of Trenton which was fought in 1776 and an age of 10 seems very young although he may have been a drummer boy. For now, assume that he was born some time before 1766. 1880 Census for his grandson Thomas Benton Leamon says he was born in Scotland.

This land purchase was not found in BLM records (perhaps due to different spelling).

Rebecca probably appeared in the census of 7 August 1820 in the household of her husband James Leamon at Westland, Guernsey County, Ohio. She was in the over 45 age group; over 45.4

Rebecca died in 1848 in Jasper County, Illinois.1 She was buried in the Leamon Cemetery at Jasper County.5
