James Kinsler (Sr)

M, b. 1760?
FatherUnknown Kinsler b. 1730?
James Kinsler (Sr) was born in 1760?.1

Per Patti Forbes, researching the Kinsler family is confusing because of the many ways that the name has been recorded. Patti has found the name recorded in Bourbon, Grant, and Harrison Counties, Kentucky, and in Putnam County, Indiana in the following ways: Kenshler, Kensler, Kincherlow, Kinchloe, Kinchlow, Kinslaer, Kinslaw, Kinsler, Kinsloe, Kinslow, Kintler, Kimeler. To these list can be added: Rinsler, an obvious mis-reading of an handwritten entry. All of these names refer to the family Kinsler.

James' date of birth, wife's maiden name and the dates of his marriage and death are not known. He is included here primarily as a common basis for his many descendants.2

James married Jane [--?--] Kinsler in 1778?.3

Per Patti Forbes, the 1800 Tax List for Harrison County Kentucky includes both James and William Kinsler. Since James' son, William, was probably too young to be taxed in 1800, this suggests that James had a brother, William.

Patty Forbes also lists a number of land transactions and a coroner's inquest from 1809 to 1816 that name James Kinsler but it is difficult to know if this is father or son.

James Kinsloe was listed as a purchaser from the estate of John Hutcherson in July 1808. In May 1807, he was appointed guardian to John and Edward Hutcherson, infant orphans of Edward Hutcherson, dec'd. Several other references to this guardianship were made in February, May, and October 1820. Some or all of these references may actually pertain to James' son, James Jr.2 James Kinsler (Sr) was also known as James Kinslow.4

James was listed as the head of a family in the 45+ age group on the 1810 Census at Harrison County, Kentucky. Included in the household were 1 female 45+, presumably his wife; 1 female 16-26; and 1 male 10-16..5 He was listed in the household of James Kinsler (Jr) in the 1820 Census at Harrison County, Kentucky, at the age of 45+.6
