Father | Joseph Matthaus Ball1 b. 25 May 1649, d. 11 Jul 1711 |
Mother | Elizabeth Julia Romney1 b. 1653, d. 6 Feb 1703 |
Joseph Ball was born on 11 March 1689 at Lancaster County, Virginia.2,3,4,5,6
Colonial Families of America, 1607-1775, Vol II Ball Family, lists a marriage for Joseph (1689-1760) and Frances Ravenscroft in 1709 with 3 children: Charles (1717-1719); Hetty Betty (1719-1720); and Frances (1720-1782). But it also lists Mary (b. 1707-8) as the child of a 2nd marriage. Mary married Augustine Washington in 1730-1 and was the mother of George Washington (b. 1731-2). But this doesn't seem to make sense since Mary, supposed daughter of a second marriage, was born before Joseph's documented first marriage in 1709. Further information is needed for Mary's true ancestry.
Joseph married Frances Ravenscroft on 3 December 1709 in All Hallows London Wall, London, England. Note that the same marriage of the same people on the same date was recorded in a Northern Neck, Virginia Marriage entry. The England location is accepted here because Joseph apparently spent most of his time in England and Frances Ravenscroft apparently lived there..7,8
Joseph inherited Morattico Plantation in Lancaster County, Virginia on the death of his father, Col. Joseph Ball. But he lived primarily in England, making periodic trips to Morattico which is overseen primarily by his nephew, Joseph Chinn.2 In England, Joseph lived in "Westham" in County Essex, England.9
Joseph was named to handle the estate of Joseph Matthaus Ball on 25 June 1711 in St Mary's White Chapel Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia. The will acknowleges a Deed of Gift made to Joe Ball and his daughters Hannah Travers, Anne Conway, and Esther Chinn. Joseph is specifically given a Negro slave and her future children, her other children going to Anne Conway and Esther Chinn. He was also given 400 acres of land, some stock, and a tub. Any remainder of the estate not otherwise bequeathed was to be shared equally between Joseph, Anne Conway, and Esther Chinn.10
Joseph is reported to have settled in London as a practitioner of law.11
A Cheseboro Family Tree indicates (without attribution but possibly based on Duerigen Family Records) that Joseph married Elizabeth "Mercy" Hunter in 1721. If so, John Arnold Ball would have been a child of this union.12
At least one Ancestry Family Tree indicates without specific attribution that Joseph was the father of several children not included herein, namely:
- Timothy Ball 1709-1829;
- Samuel Ball 1710-1733;
- Daniel Ball 1737-1820; and
- Isaiah Ball ?-1783.13
In 1729, Joseph proposed a measure to educate Virginia youths for the ministry. The county record reads "A proposition of Joseph Ball, gentleman, in behalf of himself and the rest of the inhabitants of Virginia, directed to the Honourable the General assembly, concerning the instructing a certain number of young gentlemen, Virginians born, in the study of divinity, at the county's charge, was this day presented in court by the said Joseph Ball, and on his prayer ordered to be certified to the General Assembly."11
Joseph was listed in the 1750 Virginia State Census in White Chapple Parish, Lancaster County.14
Joseph died on 10 January 1760 at Richmond County, Virginia, at age 70.2,15
