     According to Kenneth Ira Tinkham (John Tinkham is My Name, 1984), the name, Tinkham, originated in Devon County, England, first appearing in records there about 1550 A.D. The name was most likely associated with the Teign River since the first version of the name was Teigncombe. The suffix, "combe" is Anglo-Saxon and means a bowl-shaped valley. Some of the early spellings of the name were: Teyncombe, Tinckecombe, Tincome, and Tingcome. The name first appeared as Tinkham during the 1720's in Massachusetts.
