Mother | Matthias Beare b. 1591, d. 19 Jan 1626 |
Ephraim Tinkham was born on 6 January 1616 at Ashburton, Devon, England.1,2 He was christened on 23 February 1618 at Barnstable, Devon, England.3 Ephraim Tinkham was almost certainly born in Barnstaple, England in 1618. (All information on Ephraim Tinkham is taken from Tinkham, Kenneth, John Tinkham My Name, pp.2-6.) He arrived in Boston at age 14 on the ship Charles in 1632 as an indentured servant of Timothy Hatherly. The indenture was transferred to John Winslow in 1634 and completed in 1642.
Ephraim was involved in numerous land transactions and carried out a number of services for the community. He was appointed Surveyor of Highways on several locations and was one of the first settlers of Middleboro, Mass. He was a selectman in both Plymouth and Middleboro.
During King Phillip's War the residents of Middleboro were forced to flee and their homes were burnt. Ephraim apparently never returned to Middleboro although several of his children lived there.
Further details on Ephraim, taken from Kenneth Ira Tinkham's booklet, John Tinkham is My Name, are included in a Research Note. On on 23 July 1634, Timothy Hatherly "hath turned over his servant, Ephraim Tinkcom, to dwell with John Winsloe, of New Plymouth, for the whole terme of years expressed in a certayne pare of indentures.".4 On on 2 August 1642, Ephraim Tinkham was granted 25 acres of land for his service by indenture and on 27 September 1642 he was granted ten acres of upland.4 In 1643, he was a resident at in the Town of Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, in the list of men able to bear arms.4
Ephraim married Mary Browne circa 1646 in Town of Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Ephraim and Mary apparently had a child born about 1647 who may have still been living in 1651 if Bradford is correct that they had two children by March 1650/51..5,6 On on 27 October 1647, Ephraim Tinkham and Mary his wife sold to Henry Sampson "all that third part of that lott which was formerly the land of Peter Brown deceased.".4 On on 1 May 1655, "Ephraim Tinkham and Arther Hathaway desired liberty of the court to go up with their families to live on the lands of John Barnes at Lakenham (in Plymouth).".4 On on 22 March 1663, Ephraim Tinkham and John Smith Jr. were listed as owners of lot 5 on Puncateesett Necke (now in Rhode Island).4 On on 5 June 1666, the court granted 12 acres to Sergent Ephraim Tinkham.4 He bought and/or sold land in at Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, from (an unknown value).7 On on 25 March 1668, Ephraim Tinkham bought from William Snow 1/3 part of a whole share of upland and meadow in Dartmouth which had been granted by the Court unto Peter Brown, a purchaser or old comer, and the father of William's wife Rebecca.7 On on 1 June 1675, he was a selectman in at in the Town of Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. He was a frequent member of juries over a long period of time.4 The will of Ephraim Tincom Senir of Plymouth dated on 17 January 1683/84, proved 5 June 1685, names his wife Mary; eldest sone Ephraim; sons Ebenezer, Peter, Elkiah, John, & Isaac; daughter Mary Tomson. His inventory was taken 20 May 1685.4
