Edward Jumper
M, b. 9 December 1682
Father | Daniel Jumper b. c 1653 |
Mother | Mary Knight b. c 1655 |
Edward Jumper was born on 9 December 1682 at Ringwood, Hampshire, England.1
Edward Jumper was a Sea Captain. In 1707 he was granted upward of four acres in Gloucester, Essex Co., Massachusetts. His land lay on the westerly side of Woodbury Street and south of Washington Street. Woodbury Street is the northerly end of a path that led from these places across the woods to Sandy Bay (Rockport). It was long known as Jumper's Lane and as the path from Sandy Bay to Jumper's.2
Edward married Anne Lee say 1710 at Gloucester, Essex Co., Massachusetts.3
Gene Jumper's GEDCOM includes the following entry for Edward Jumper without identifying a specific source: "As the first Englishman of the Jumper surname to establish in the New England area (to the source writer's knowledge), it seemed appropriate to note the grants of arms to the ancestry of this surname. Burke's General Armory of England, Scotland and Wales referred to Bysshe's grant of arms to Wm. Jumper on 22 Feb. 1651 which was recalled later in the Act of Indemnity in 1660. Burke's also referred to a grant to Sir William Jumper in 1704 and to another grant of arms mucholder, not personalized to one individual, granted to a family/clan pedigree. The latter reference of arms for the entire Jumper family requires further research. From documents available/discovered from England, it appears that Edward fits into the Ringwood family with the birth date given as 9 December1682. Until future data is revealed which will disprove this birth location and family origin, the data will set as a workable reference for further research."
However, William Jumper is not listed in the ancesters of Edward Jumper on the GEDCOM. In view of this and the lack of a specific source, this information must be considered unproven.

- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. Several Internet sources list the birth date of John Leach as 3 Sep 1648 without citing a source. F. Phelps Leach's biography of Lawrence Leach, p.5, says that John Leach, s/o Lawrence Leach, had a son John baptized 3 Sept 1648 and another son John baptized 19 Nov 1648 with a twin sister Sarah baptized on ? Nov 1648. Salem VR, v.1, p.515 (based on records of the First Church) says a John Leach was baptized on 3: 7m: 1648 and a Sarah Leach was baptized on 19: 9 m: 1648. The parents were not identiofied in both cases. No other John Leach is listed in the Salem VR in this time period. Assuming that the annual month count at that time began with March, these dates in the VR would agree with 3 Sept and 19 Nov 1648. If the Lawrence Leach reference is correct and there were two sons named John Leach, the first one must have been born in 1647 or before and died shortly before the twin John was baptized in November and given the same name. Alternatively, if this reference is wrong and there was only one son named John Leach, it is likely that he and Sarah were not twins but were born nearly a year apart, accounting for the difference in their baptism dates. Since it seems unlikely that the church records and Salem VR would list the first child, John, and the third child, Sarah, but miss the second John in between them, I have assumed that there was actually only one John in this family but that the dates given in Lawrence Leach are correct for the baptisms. The Lawrence Leach reference also lists a 2nd daughter named Sarah who was baptized less than 4 years after the 1st Sarah, indicating that the 1st Sarah must have died or, quite possibly, the extra John Leach and Sarah Leach were actually members of a different Leach family. The Lawrence Leach reference has been criticized for mixing up the children of different families in earlier generations.
- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. No definite source has been found that identifies the wife of this John Leach as Mary Edwards although this is so stated in several online entries. The available facts are these. A marriage between John and Mary Edwards is not recorded in the Vital records of Beverly, Salem, or Wenham. However, F. Phelps Leach's biography of Lawrence Leach indicates that John's wife was named Mary and several Wenham death records are for the children of John & Mary Leach. Thus, it seems reasonably certain that the wife's first name was Mary. William Stowell Mill's summary of the Edwards Family of Wenham identifies the sons and some of the daughters of Rice Edwards but does not specify a Mary Edwards. However, this reference does cite an agreement in 1683 which was signed by the children of Rice Edwards, among which was John Leach. Torrey's New England Marriages lists an undated marriage between John Leach and Mary ?Edwards. Overall, it seems fairly certain that John Leach married a daughter of Rice Edwards and her name was Mary. The date of the marriage is guestimated from the birth of their son William about 1678.
