William Noyes was born about 1568 in Cholderton, Wilts, England, the son of Robert William Noyes and Joan Attridge.

William matriculated at University College, Oxford, on November 15, 1588, at the age of 20 and received his B.A. on May 21, 1592. Where he spent the next nine years is not known, but in 1601 he became rector of Cholderton. Cholderton is situated between Amesbury in Wiltshire and Andover in Hampshire and is 11 miles from Salisbury, site of the great Salisbury Cathedral. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, was, as William Noyes knew it, a small and very simple building which was destroyed about 1840. William's grandson, Rev. Nicholas Noyes of Salem, Massachusetts, told Rev. Cotton Mather that his grandfather was "a very learned man" whose wife was a sister of the learned Mr. Robert Parker.

According to the resister of the Diocese, William officiated in the parish from 1602 to 1620 when he resigned. He was then appointed Attorney General to the King. He was succeeded as rector by his son, Rev. Nathan Noyes.

William Noyes appears to have married twice (according to Davis). The name of his first wife is not known but they appear to have had two children.

William's second wife was Ann Parker, daughter of Robert Parker and Mary Eydith Burge. Ann was a sister of Rev. Robert Parker, a learned Puritan divine, and a graduate of Oxford, who was driven to Holland for "non-conformity" to Queen Elizabeth's forms. William and Ann were married sometime before 1608 and had at least seven children. Ann survived William by many years, dying in Cholderton in 1658 at the age of 82.

The exact date of William's death is uncertain. An inventory of his estate was entered on April 30, 1622, and his wife was named administratix on 28 May 1622 (Court of Archdeacon of Sarum). About 1651 Rev. Samuel Haskins was presented to the Cholderton rectory and began a new parish register. In it he wrote "Mr. William Noyes, Rector of Choldrington about 30 years, departed this life anno 1616." Davis (Mass & Maine Families) considers this date erroneous.

An e-mail message from Veronica Smith, forwarded thru several hands, indicates that a newspaper clipping found in a copy of Col. Noyes' Record of Some of the Noyes Descendants, etc. stated that investigations in England had shown that Rev. Wm. Noyes' wife was Anne Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephens of Burdrop Manor and sister of Dorothy Stephens, mother of Rev. Thomas Parker. However, the book by Col. Henry Noyes says flatly (v.1, p.45) that "The statement by some writers that Rev. William Noyes married Anne Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq of Burdrop Manor, Wilts, England, and that she was the mother of James and Nicholas Noyes, has been admitted to be undoubtedly incorrect".

Veronica believes that Anne Stephens was Rev. Noyes wife instead of Anne Parker. If Davis is correct, Rev. Noyes had two wifes so he could have married both Stephens and Parker. However, without further evidence, assume that Rev Noyes' wife was Anne Parker. Omit reference to another wife until further evidence.
  3. [S333] Assumption:, Davis, Mass & Maine Families, p.54 says William seems to have married twice, his first wife being unknown. His certain wife was Anne Parker whom he married sometime before 1608 (when son James was born). Assuming first wife died about 1600 (since she had 2 children born after 1597), the second marriage was probably about 1601. Both LDS Family Group Record and Hubbard's Family Group Sheets give date of marriage as 1595 (based on birthdate of William's oldest child?) but this was apparently the first marriage.
  4. [S333] Assumption:, According to Davis, Mass & Maine Families, p.54, an inventory of his estate was entered on this date so his death must have been shortly before. LDS Family Group Record gives date of death as 30 Apr 1622 and date of burial as 1621!

FatherRobert Parker b. c 1543, d. 1590/91
MotherMary Eydith Burge b. c 1555, d. a 1583
Ann Parker was born about 1657 in Cholderton, England, the daughter of Robert Parker and Mary Eydith Burge. She married William Noyes sometime around 1601. William had apparently been married previously.

Ann Parker died on 7 March, 1657/58 at the age of 82, as recorder in the Cholderton parish register. The will of Anne Noyes of Cholderton, Co. Wilts, widow, dated March 18, 1655, was proved April 20, 1658 in London. The will is at Somerset House, London. She gave to Jame Noyes and Nicholas Noyes "my two sons now in New England" 12 pence apiece and to such children as they have living 12 pence apiece. To her son-in-law Thomas Kent of Upper Wallop, 12 pence and to his wife 5 shillings and to their children 5 pence apiece. To Robert Reade of East Cholderton, gentleman, the residue, and he is to be executor.

As Ephraim and John Noyes, sons of William, were both living in 1655 when Ann Noyes made her will and as they are not mentioned therein, it is reasonable to assume that they are children of an earlier wife. Nor do the wills of Ephram and Nathan Noyes name any of the New England Noyeses or the known Parker connections. Anne Parker was born circa 1575 in Cholderton, Wiltshire, England.1
