Samuel Abbe
M, b. 1650, d. March 1698
Samuel Abbe was born in 1650 at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 Samuel was the son of John Abbe who emigrated from Norfolk Co., England to America in the ship Bonaventure in 1635, settled in Salem and then in Wenham in 1642. John Abbe married twice. His first wife was named Mary, possibly Mary Loring. His second wife was Mary Goldsmith, widow of Richard Goldsmith, who he married in 1674.
John Abbe had seven children, all with his first wife. They were John (born 1636 in Salem, died 1700 in Windham); Samuel; Sarah; Marah; Rebecca (born about 1647, died 1704); Obadiah; and Thomas.2 He married Mary Knowlton on 12 October 1672 at Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts.3,4 (an unknown value.)5
Samuel received a grant of 10 acres of land in Wenham, and land to set his house on, from his father and mother on 3 April 1675. He was a land surveyor in 1676.6
Samuel was made a freeman in Wenham 3 October 1680, removed to Salem Village (now Danvers) in 1682. In 1697, he removed to Windham Centre, CT where he died.7
Samuel was living in Salem during the days of witchcraft and was one of those who opposed its fanaticism. He signed a document testifying to the good character of Rebecca Nourse and was involved in the several witchcraft trials (excerpts of his testimony are quoted in the reference).8
Samuel died in March 1698 in Windham Centre, Windham County, Connecticut.9
