Many times before a railroad was built, Sam made trips to Keokuk with ox teams for provisions. When he moved to Webster county he drove a flock of sheep, his cattle and other stock through Des Moines, which was then a small village, going through what is now the business section of that city.8

Mary Ellen Kessler

     Mary Ellen Kessler was born on 9 July 1853 in Ohio. She was the daughter of William Edward Kessler and Anna Catherine McLain..1,2

Mary married Alonzo Parvin McKinley on 21 November 1886 in Fulton County, Illinois. Alonzo and Mary had at least 2 children, namely:

          1911. 5 children. Died 1974. Buried Russell Cemetery**;
     - Lee Kessler Mckinley. Born 1891. Married Esther Wiltsly 1913,

When Mary was six years of age she moved with her family Fulton county, Ill., where she resided until after her marriage to Alonzo Parvin McKinley, November 21st, 1886. They then moved to Webster County, Iowa, where they resided until 1891, when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, hoping to improve her health. In 1901 they again removed to Lucas County, Iowa, where they have resided thereafter.5

Mary died on 9 September 1914 in Russell, Lucas County, Iowa, at age 61. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. P.A.Tinkham at the Russell Presbyterian Church..6,2 She was buried in the Russell Cemetery at Russell.7,2
