The plateau, later called Waite Hill, was first settled in 1820 by Samuel Tomlinson from Connecticut. In February 1821 Erastus Waite, then 28 years old, and his brother Alvan, 18, came to begin clearing land recently purchased by their father, William Waite. The deed, dated 20 November 1820, transferred to Mr Waite of Marcellus, N.Y. " in consideration of the sum of $1572.80, all that undivided one-half of six hundred and twenty nine acrs of land....lying in the State of Ohio, in the County of Cuyahoga, formerly township of Carlton, now town of Chagrin" This purchase covered the western half of the Waite Hill plateau in what is now the township of Willoughby in Lake County.

Erastus and Alvan built two large log houses for their father's family and Erastus' own family. After they harvested their crops in the fall of 1821 the Waite families were ready to move from New York to Ohio, probably by oxcart and possibly by lake steamer. Mercy, Erastus Waite's wife made the trip with four small children, including a nine-month old baby.
