Tinkham to his daughter 13 Feb 1902 (quoted in Ora Robert's Tinkham history), Zenas and Loveday lived at family homestead in Spafford, Onondaga Co. N.Y. caring for his parents. Zenas seemed to have the adventurous spirit of his forefathers and wanted to go further west into Michigan. His mother, Adah Winsor Tinkham, said "no", knowing all the hardships of frontier life. But after she died in 1851, Daniel said to his son "If you still wish to go, I will go with you". So in 1852 they went to Buffalo and boarded a steamboat for Michigan. Everyone in the family was sick on the boat except the 85-year old Daniel who stood the trip very well.

     In Michigan, they settled in Sumnerville, Cass Co. located on Dowagiac Creek between the towns of Dowagiac and Niles. Daniel succumbed to malaria a year later.

     Zenas and Loveday had the following children (all born in New York State):
     Perry Tinkham (6 Aug 1827 - after 1882). Married Harriet Baxter 12 March 1851.
     Porter Tinkham (7 Oct 1829 - after 1882). Was veterinary surgeon. Married Polly Campbell 19 Nov 1851.
     Daniel Tinkham (26 June 1832 - after 1882). Married Sarah Nortrant 15 Feb 1857.
     Relly Tinkham (25 Apr 1835 - ). Died in Pomona, Calif.
     Mary Tinkham (16 July 1837 - ). Married Osborn Silver 18 Feb 1855. After hedied in 1891, she married H. C. Shattuck.

John Grinnell moved to Shelby, Orleans County, NY with Alanson Tinkham in the spring of 1820 and settled in the southern part of town. They cleared the land, built log houses, and kept bachelor's quarters until autumn when their fathers, Isaiah and Daniel, brought their families with an ox team from Spafford, NY. At least three of John's brother's also settled in Orleans County by 1830. When Praxana passed away in 1838, John was left with six of the children ranging in age from fourteen to two years old.

]John lived for 35 years on the original settlement, Lot 59, Range 2, one mile south of the Methodist Church, then moved to the East Shelby-Millville road where he died in 1888. He was a kind energetic man and assisted new ettlers in making payments and building their log huts, many of which had only a blanket for a door. His brother, Major Grinnell, and cousin, Jerry Crane, settled nearby.

John married for a second time about 1839 to Miss Lucy Babcock. The couple had two sons before Lucy died leaving John with two more children aged six and three.

John's third wife was Mrs. Julia Ann Abbott, they had a daughter together. By the time John died, he had several farms in Shelby and was described in his obituary as a "very energetic man." Julia survived him by a year and nine months.4,2

John died on 12 March 1888 in Shelby, Orleans County, New York, at age 91.5,2 He was buried in the East Shelby Cemetery at East Shelby, Orleans County, New York.2
