Tinkham to his daughter 13 Feb 1902 (quoted in Ora Robert's Tinkham history), Zenas and Loveday lived at family homestead in Spafford, Onondaga Co. N.Y. caring for his parents. Zenas seemed to have the adventurous spirit of his forefathers and wanted to go further west into Michigan. His mother, Adah Winsor Tinkham, said "no", knowing all the hardships of frontier life. But after she died in 1851, Daniel said to his son "If you still wish to go, I will go with you". So in 1852 they went to Buffalo and boarded a steamboat for Michigan. Everyone in the family was sick on the boat except the 85-year old Daniel who stood the trip very well.

     In Michigan, they settled in Sumnerville, Cass Co. located on Dowagiac Creek between the towns of Dowagiac and Niles. Daniel succumbed to malaria a year later.

John Grinnell moved to Shelby, Orleans County, NY with Alanson Tinkham in the spring of 1820 and settled in the southern part of town. They cleared the land, built log houses, and kept bachelor's quarters until autumn when their fathers, Isaiah and Daniel, brought their families with an ox team from Spafford, NY. At least three of John's brother's also settled in Orleans County by 1830. When Praxana passed away in 1838, John was left with six of the children ranging in age from fourteen to two years old.

]John lived for 35 years on the original settlement, Lot 59, Range 2, one mile south of the Methodist Church, then moved to the East Shelby-Millville road where he died in 1888. He was a kind energetic man and assisted new ettlers in making payments and building their log huts, many of which had only a blanket for a door. His brother, Major Grinnell, and cousin, Jerry Crane, settled nearby.

John married for a second time about 1839 to Miss Lucy Babcock. The couple had two sons before Lucy died leaving John with two more children aged six and three.

John's third wife was Mrs. Julia Ann Abbott, they had a daughter together. By the time John died, he had several farms in Shelby and was described in his obituary as a "very energetic man." Julia survived him by a year and nine months.^4,2

John died on 12 March 1888 in Shelby, Orleans County, New York, at age 91.^5,2 He was buried in the East Shelby Cemetery at East Shelby, Orleans County, New York.²

Included in the household were his wife, Cyhthia (45, NY); 3 sons, William (19, NY), Edwin (12, NY), and Harry (5, NY); 3 daughters, Juliana (16, NY), Almeda (9, NY). and Mary (7, NY); and his father, Harry Smith (72, CT).⁴

William was listed as the head of household in the 1865 New York State Census in Wirt, Allegany County. He was 54, born in New York, and listed as a blacksmith. Included in the household were his wife, Cynthia (55, NY); a son, Harry (15, NY); and a daughter, Ameda Hotchkiss (19, NY) and her husband, Lyman Hotchkiss (23), a farmer.⁵

William was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census in Elmendaro, Lyon County, Kansas. He was 69, born in New York, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household was his wife, Cynthia (70, NY). Apparently living next door was his son, H. E. Smith, and his family.⁶

     Anna Benedict was born on 29 August 1823 in Huron, Erie County, Ohio. Her parents were William Benedict (1776-1843) and Caroline "Alse" Hoag (1785-1840).²

Anna married Lewis P. Hyde on 9 June 1842 in Delaware County, Ohio, They had four sons: William, Lewis Caspar, Alonzo, and Zebediah..¹

Anna appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of her husband Lewis P. Hyde at Town of Hortona, Brown County, Wisconsin. She was 25, born in Ohio.³

Anna appeared in the census of 1860 in the household of her husbandX Lewis P. Hyde at Farmington, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. She was 38, born in Ohio.⁴

In 1879, Anna and her sons and their families joined her husband in the Applegate Valley, Josephine Co., Oregon.⁵

Anna was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census in Williamsburg, Josephine County, Oregon. She was 55, born in Ohio, and listed as a keeping house. Included in the household were her 3 sons; Alonzo (29, WI), Zebediah (27, WI), and Lewis C. (19, WI); and a grandadughter, Maggie M (5, Dakota Territory).⁶

In 1884, Annie bought the Palace Hotel in Grants Pass, Oregon from Ray Simpkins.⁷

Anna appeared in the census of 1900 in the household of her son Lewis C. Hyde at Applegate, Jackson County, Oregon. She was76.

Anna appeared in the census of 1910 in the household of her son, Lewis C Heyde at Williams, Josephine County, Oregon. She was 86, born in Ohio.⁸

Anna died She died of hyperstatic edema of the lungs following confinement to bed after an injury on 27 July 1912 in Canyonville, Douglas County, Oregon, at age 88.⁹ She was buried in the IOOF Cemetery at Canyonville.⁵

     Lewis P. Hyde was born on 11 April 1821 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. His parents were Zebdediah Hyde (1786-1860) and Achsah (Andrew) Hyde, both born in Massachusetts.¹

Lewis married Anna Benedict on 9 June 1842 in Delaware County, Ohio, They had four sons: William, Lewis Caspar, Alonzo, and Zebediah..¹

Lewis had the following children:

*Henry Erastmus Hyde, b. 21 June 1847 in Waupaca, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin; d. 4 May 1868.

*Achsah Marie Hyde, b. 2 Mar. 1853 Waupaca Co., Wisconsin; m. Thomas Moss Sargent (1842–1915) in 1869; d. 28 Aug. 1889.

*Zebadiah Hyde, b. 2 Mar. 1853 Waupaca Co., Wisconsin; m. Katherine (Kate) Amanda Herriott (1869–1960); d. 22 Mar. 1928 Jackson County, Oregon. Zeb is the twin brother of Achsah.

*Alonzo (Lon) Allen Hyde, b. 20 Oct. 1858, Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., Wisconsin; m. Alice (Allie) May Custer (1858–1934); d. 22 Mar. 1928 Jackson County, Oregon. Note: Alonzo A. Hyde is living with sister Esther A. Hyde Williams in the 1870 U.S. Census for the Dakota Territory, USA. Possibly while living in S. Dakota he met and married wife #1- Sarah Ann Stillinger, mother to Margaret "Maggie" M. Hyde, birthdate as 1875, born in South Dakota. Sarah Ann Hyde was born 25 Jan. 1858 and died in 27 Oct. 1877, Lincoln Co., South Dakota. She is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton, Lincoln Co., So. Dakota. She was probably a sister of Margaret A. Stillinger, Alonzo's brother William's wife. Alonzo moves on to Oregon and is listed as (widower) & is living with daughter "Maggie" in Anna Benedict Hyde's residence at time of 1880 U.S. Census. On 25 Oct 1893, daughter Maggie married Eugene C. Chausse in Josephine Co., Oregon. Maggie and Eugene have a son, Dewey E. Causse, b. 1899 in Oregon. In 1920, he's living in Snohomish Co.,? Washington

*Lewis Casper Hyde, b. 30 Sept. 1860 Waupaca, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin; m. Anna May Lewman (1875–1948) 1 Aug. 1900; d. 9 Jun 1957 Jackson County, Oregon.³

Lewis was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Town of Hortona, Brown County, Wisconsin. He was 28, born in Ohio. Included in the household were his wife, Anna (28, OH); and 3 sons, Easton (7), William (5), and Henry (3), all born in Wisconson.⁴

Lewis was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Farmington, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. He was 39, born in Ohio, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household were his wife, Anna (38, OH); 4 sons, William (15, OH), Henry (13, WI), Alonzo (10, WI), and Zepediah (7, WI); and a daughter, Axie (7, WI).⁵

Lewis enlisted as a Union soldier on 28 February 1864 at Clyman, Dodge County, Wisconsin..⁶

Apparently Lewis P. Hyde was in the Applegate Valley prior to his family coming out from South Dakota in the 1870s. The family is listed in the 1870 U.S. Census as living in the "Dakota Territory." It is stated that he built his cabin sometime in the 1870s, near the Knox homestead. In 1879, Anna and her sons and their families joined her husband in the Applegate Valley, Josephine Co., Oregon.³

Lewis ( listed as Lafayette in the census) appeared in the census of 1880 in the household of his son, William at Jump Off Joe, Josephine County, Oregon. He was 59, born in Ohio.⁷

Lewis died on 29 April 1897 in Curry County, Oregon, at age 76.⁸
