He settled in and lived the rest of his life in Georgetown on the banks of the Iowa River. Georgetown was eventually outstripped by its downstream rival, Iowa Falls.

After his marriage in Mentor, Ohio, William went to Iowa in October, 1856, then returned to Willoughby in July 1857 where he worked at carriage making. He enlisted in Co. K, 105th Ohio Volunteers, August 6, 1862, and was sent to Kentucky. He had sunstroke on the march out from Louisville, then was trampled on by a rebel charge at Perryville Oct. 8. As a result, he was disabled and discharged. He never recovered from the injury and could only half work but he got no pension.6

William made a will in June 1868 at Willoughby, Ohio. Based on a copy of a handwritten will dated ? June 1868 in Bob Slayton's files, William W. Tinkham, Willoughby, Lake Co., Ohio directed that his debts be paid and all the residue given to Jane, his wife. Jane Tinkham was named as executor and guardian of the 3 children; Amelia ?, Walter S., & Olive M. Tinkham until they reached 21.
William died on 6 July 1868 in Waite Hill, Willoughby Township, Lake County, Ohio, at age 44.6 He was buried in the Waite Hill Cemetery at Waite Hill.7
