There he established a small general store in University Place; afterward he became manager of the University Bookstore.

Ida May is mentioned in "History of Slayton Family" compiled by Asa W. Slayton in 1898. Her father and mother were Abijah Taylor and Mary Ann Balch. She had five children and several grandchildren listed in the Slayton History.
Per letter from Myrtle Morehouse Slayton on 2 August 1957, Ida May had only a brief formal education but graduated from a four-year Chatauqua course in literature. She pursued her reading in the Aloha Study Club of which she was the first president. Her special interests were in the University Christian Church and the WCTU of Iowa. She was president of the Christian Women's Board of Missions in University Church for five years and a resident trustee of the WCTU of Iowa. Ida May Taylor was born on 14 March 1857 in Thompson Center, Ohio.
Ida married Stephen Charles Slayton on 30 December 1872 in Eldora, Iowa. Stephen and Ida May had at least five children, including;
