Charles Franklin was once a city Sidewalk Commissioner in Des Moines and was a charter member of the University Church of Christ. He, his wife Amelia, Nellie Slayton Aurner, and Harvey John Slayton all transferred from the Central Church of Des Moines to the University Church on 24 June 1888.8
Charles died of pneumonia on 4 March, 1899 at the home of his son, Henry Howard Slayton in Des Moines, after a week-long illness. His obituary in the Christian Worker reads in part:
"Another 'Father in Israel' has laid down the armor, severed the remaining earthly ties and passed over the silent river. The father of the editor of the City Mission Department and of H. H. Slayton, superintendent of the University Place Sunday School departed this life at the home of the latter, 2706 Kingman Avenue, March 4th. The funeral was conducted by Bro. L. B. Amos, in the absence of the pastor, at the University Church on the Lord's Day, the 5th inst."
"He had four brothers and one sister, of whom the sister, Mrs. Sarah Allyn of Mount Victory, Ohio and John Slayton of Iowa Falls who is present on this occasion, are the only survivors and are both older than he."
"Religiously, Father Slayton was a lifelong and very devoted member of the Church of Christ. He was intimately associated with all the pioneers in the Reformation on the 'Western Reserve'... In his younger days, he drank deep draughts of Heavenly wisdom from his pocket testament while following the plow."11,2 He was buried in the Woodland Cemetery at Des Moines.8,2
