Daniel Tinkham

     Daniel Tinkham was born on 30 April 1767 in Town of Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island.1

Daniel married Adah Winsor circa 1789 in Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island.1 Daniel and Adah must have started migrating very soon after they were married for Mercy and Stephen were born in Springfield, Vt. (no record for where John was born), Alanson was born in Greenfield, Saratoga Co., N.Y., and Almeda was born in Herkimer Co., N.Y. in 1807 where her mother and the younger children were staying with one of her brother's family. Meanwhile Daniel and the older sons forged ahead and started a home on Otisco side hill in Spafford, Onondaga Co. near Skaneateles Lake. (Otisco Valley is just north-east of Spafford, NY east of Skaneateles Lake). Reportedly one of Russell's grandsons still lives at this place.

     After Adah died in 1851, Daniel over eighty-four years old moved to Sumnerville, Cass Co., Michigan with his son Zenas and family but succumbed to malaria the next year. Daniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census at Greenfield, Saratoga Co., New York, with 4 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female 26-45.2 On 11 April 1804 Daniel Tinkham bought 100 acres in Aurelius, Onondage Co., NY. He sold this tract 3 March 1810, with wife Adah participating, to Jonathan Berry.3 Daniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census at in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., New York. His family included 2 males and 3 females under 10, 3 males 10-16, 1 male and 1 female 16-26, and 1 male and female 26-45.4

Daniel served as a Captain in the War of 1812. Local histories also refer to Daniel as Captain.5 Daniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Spafford, NY with 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45, 2 females uner 10, 2 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female over 45.6 On 6 April 1839 Daniel Tinkham sold 209 acres in Spafford, NY to his son Zenas.3

Daniel appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of his son Zenas Tinkham at Spafford, Onondaga County, New York. He was 82, born in Rhode Island.7 He died on 1 November 1853 at Sumnerville, Cass County, Michigan, at the age of 84 years 6 months.8,1,9 He was buried in the Summerville Cemetery at Summerville, Cass County, Michigan. He was 86 years, 6 months old. The inscription on gravestone reads "Afflictions sohis me on earth we have. Physicians skill was vain. Till God with love called him above. And freed him from his pain".10,9
