     John Tinkham was born before 1720 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 On 15 Jan 1739, John Tinkham Jr. of Dartmouth was appointed administrator on the estate of his father John Tinkham late of Dartmouth, yeoman, deceased. The inventory of the estate included a homestead of about 258 acres on the east side of the Achushnet River in what would eventually become New Bedford and then Fairhaven. Quite a few other parcels of land are included in the estate. On 20 April 1741 the estate was divided among eldest son John, sons Peter and Hezekiah, daughter Mary Taber and daughter Martha Tinkcom. Hezekiah and Martha chose Henry Sampson as their guradian; Peter choe Joseph Tabor as his guardian.2,3 He married Mary Allen on 13 May 1741 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. John and Mary had the following children, all born in Dartmouth:

On 24 January 1745.John sold land he had inherited from his father, John Tinkham, in a Cedar Swamp in Dartmouth, Bristol County MA, to Stephen Taber (Bristol County Deeds, 49:234) for 30 pounds. This land was two sixths of the two thirds share of a 16 acre plot of land in Cedar Swamp his father had claimed in 1686..5 He died before 3 May 1785 (when a dowr was ordered set off for his widow) at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, (now New Bedford, MA).1

     Mary Allen was born on 9 July 1718 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 Mary was the daughter of William Allen of Dartmouth and his wife Elizabeth.2

On 4 October 1785, John Tinkham and Ephraim Tripp, administrators of the estate, swore to the inventory. On 22 April 1786, an indenture agreed to divide the land into 10 shares for John Tincom; Ephraim Tripp, cooper, in right of his wife Ame; Thomas Tripp, cooper, in right of his wife Mary; Deborah Waggoner, widow; Huldah Tinkcom, seamster; Susanna Tinkcom, seamster; Marmaduke Tinkcom, mariner; Abigail Tinkcom, all of Dartmouth; and Barbra Mirick, widow and Joseph Paul, yeoman, in right of wife Hannah of Berkley heirs of father John Tinkcom of Dartmouth.4 On on 6 May 1794, a division was ordered of the part of the estate of John Tincom, late of New Bedford deceased, which had been set off to the widow Mary Tincom, who was deceased, This portion was divided among: Mary Tripp; Marmeduke Tinckham; Huldah Tinckham; Hannah Mirick, in right of her deceased mother; Almy Tripp; Susanna Tinckam; eldest son John Tinckham; Hannah Paul; Samuel & William Waggoners, in the right of their deceased mother; and the heirs of Abigail Tinvkham.4 Mary died after 4 October 1785 (when an inventory was made of her husband's estate) and before 6 May 1794 (when a division of the estate identified her as deceased).1

     Joseph Taber was born on 15 February 1710 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 Joseph was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Spooner) Taber, a descendant of the Pilgrim Francis Cooke.1

     Joseph Ellis was born circa 1709. Joseph was the son of John and Martha (Severence) Ellis.1

Joseph married Martha Tinkham on 21 February 1742/43 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Martha and Joseph had three children before June 1754 when the family was "warned" out of Dartmouth. Two of these children were apparently:

All acknowledged their signatures on 10 April 1759.2 Seth, Luke, John, and Elijah, all of New Bedford, sons of Joseph Ellis, "having purchased of our father his homestead farm where he now liveth" divided the land on 15 April 1788, the division being "consented to by the said Joseph the father.".1 Seth Ellis of New Bedford sold land there on 26 February 1790 with Joseph Ellis of New Bedford "father of Seth" and his wife Martha giving up their rights, and all acknowledged the deed on 10 April 1790.1 On 29 June 1792, Joseph Ellis and son Seth Ellis sold to Samuel Sprague, Seth's part of the division of the family land. Martha signed by a mark.1 Joseph died after 29 June 1792 (when he sold land) and before 1 August 1795 (when his wife quitclaimed land).3

     Peter Tinkham was born on 8 February 1723/24 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 A share of John Tinkham's estate went to Peter on 15 January 1739 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2,3 On 18 March 1739, Peter Tinkcom, over 14, a son of John of Dartmouth, chose Joseph Taber (his brother-in-law) as guardian.4 On 1 September 1746 Peter Tinkham of Dartmouth sold the easterly part of his homestead in Dartmouth, bounded by land set off to Hezekiah and Martha Tinkham, acknowledging the deed at Bristol County on 8 February 1755.1 On 27 May 1754 Peter Tinkham of Dartmouth, yeoman, sold land at Dartmouth that fell to him by lineal descent from his father John Tinkham, with wife Eunice giving up her dower. Peter acknowledged his signature 5 July 1754.1 On 18 December 1767 Peter Tinkham of Rochester and wife Eunice sold land in Rochester to Nathaniel Hammond.1

He was listed as over 45 with 1 female over 45, probably his wife Eunice.8 Peter died after 31 December 1772 He sold land in Rochester on this date. He is probably the Peter Tinkham listed in the 1790 Census in Rochester.1

Hezekiah Tinkham

     Hezekiah Tinkham was born on 10 November 1725 at Dartmouth or Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1,2 A share of John Tinkham's estate went to Hezekiah, Martha, Peter and Mary on 15 January 1739 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.3,4

On 18 March 1739 Hezekiah and Martha Tinkham, children of John Tinkham last of Dartmouth deceased, both over 14 years, chose Henry Sampson of Dartmouth, yeoman, their guardian.5 He married Grizzel West after 28 December 1745 (when marriage intentions were published. Both Hezekiah and Grizzel were from Rehoboth).6 Hezekiah Tinkham was of Swansea on 23 March 1746 when he bought a farm in Scituate, Rhode Island.7

On 1 December 1746, Hezekiah sold a piece of salt meadow at the foot of his late father's homestead to Gamalial Hathaway (Bristol Co. Deeds, 36:195)..8,9 He of Swanzey, husbandman, sold to Jabez Jenne of Dartmouth 14 acres of Dartmouth bounded by land of brother Peter Tinkham, as per division of estate of John Tinkham, father of said Hezekiah. It was ackowledged on 21 March 1752 at Providence.7 He of Swanzey, laborer, sold his lot of salt marsh meadow to Willam Wood on 4 April 1747, signed by Hezekiah and the mark of Sarah Tinkham 21 March 1752. He acknowledged at Providence 11 August 1752 with Grizzel releasing her dower at Providence (Note this reference to Sarah Tinkham appears to be a typographical error).7


     In a deed signed in Providence R.I. for a land sale in Dartmouth, Mass. on March 1, 1752 (Book 39, p.408), Grizel Tinkham as wife of Hezekiah Tinkham released her dower rights. This deed was witnessed by Peter Tinkham, brother of Hezekiah, and Sarah, his wife.

On 7 June 1796 Hezekiah Tinkom deeded land to Simon Smith with his wife Grizle giving up her dower.10

     Per a typed summary in Bob Slayton's file, Hezekiah and Grisel lived and were buried on a farm one mile from Harmony, town of Gloucester, R.I. A undated monument in Harmony Cemetery, Glocester states "Erected to the Memory of Hezekiah Tinkham and his wife Griswold Tinkham, Parents of Nehemiah Tinkham".9
He, blacksmith, was of Glocester, RI when he sold 7 acres in Scituate with Grizzel signing off her rights.7 He was listed in the 1774 Census of Glocester, RI with 2 males over 16, 4 males under 16, 3 females over 16, and 1 female under 16.7 In the 1782 Census of Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island, Hezekiah Tincom "and John" had 4 males under 16; 2 females 16-22; 1 male 22-50; 1 female 22-50, and 1 male over 50.7 Hezekiah was listed as the head of a family with 4 males over 16 and 1 female over 16 on the 1790 Census at in Town of Glocester, Providence Co., Rhode Island.7,11 On 7 June 1796 Hezekiah Tinkom deeded land to Simon Smith with wife Grizle giving up dower.7

Per a typed summary in Bob Slayton's file, Hezekiah and Grisel lived and were buried on a farm one mile from Harmony, town of Gloucester, R.I.

Hezekiah died in 1809 in Smithfield or Foster, Providence County, Rhode Island.1,2 He was buried in the Harmony Cemetery at Harmony, Providence County, Rhode Island. An undated monument in Harmony Cemeteryr states "Erected to the Memory of Hezekiah Tinkham and his wife Griswold Tinkham, Parents of Nehemiah Tinkham"..2

     Grizzel was born on 9 October 1729 at Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. She was listed as the daughter of John & Abigail.1,2

Grizzel married Hezekiah Tinkham after 28 December 1745.3 She died in 1810 (when payments by Glocester Town Council to Nehemiah Tinkham for the support of his parents were ended).4,2 She was buried in the Harmony Cemetery at Harmony, Providence County, Rhode Island.2

Abraham Winsor

     Abraham Winsor was born on 4 October 1720 at Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island.1 Abraham married twice. He married Mary Smith (1721-1752) on 2 Apr 1741. They had five children; Mary (1742-?), John (1744-bef1755?), Alice (1747-?), Abigail (1749-?), and Mercy (1751-?).

After the death of his first wife, Mary Smith in Jan 1752, Abraham married Sarah Smith (possibly her sister) on 24 Nov 1752. They had seven children; Mary (1754-?), John (1755-?), Abraham (1756-?), Sarah (1757-?), Lucina (1759-?), Daniel (1762-?), and Augustus (1764-?)2

Abraham died on 20 April 1798 at age 77.2

John married Mercy Smith on 13 October 1743. John and Mercy Smith had 17 children. After her death in 1776, John married Phebe Dexter (widow of William Dexter). In the second marriage, there were three more children; Abraham (1778-?), Phebe (?), and John (1783-?).1

John died in Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island.2
