Accept this date and place with considerable misgivings. 1860 Census says he was born in 1832 in Tenn. This is consistent with age range in 1840 Census. - [S333] Assumption:, Place of birth from 1860 Census. Date of birth is problematic. 1860 Census says 1833. Larry Jordan's Drake Family History says 1837. Shirley Maynard believes Sarah was only 13 when married in 1851. This is consistent with 1850 which says 1838 when she was living with her father and mother. However, no sign of affadavit for under-age marriage in 1851.
Go along with Shirley since it is her family but doubtful. - [S71] US Census, 1850, Greene Co., IN,, Taylor Twp., p.406, Dwelling 10, Family 731. This idenification is somewhat uncertain because Sarah is listed as 12 in 1850 (indicating that she was married at age 13) but shown as 27 in 1860 (giving a more reasonable age at marriage). Possibly the wrong Smith family in 1850.

Daniel was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Smith Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 26, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer with $300 property. (23, Prussia), listed as laborers, were included in the household.3
On 12 December 1860 Daniel and Mahala Archer sold to William Stanley for $350 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, Sec 4, T7, R6. This was the same land that Mahala had received from her parents, John and Mary Stanley, a few months before.4

Cause of death not stated". However, in a subsequent Declaration of Guardian of Minor Children for Pension, 23 Jan 1867, Mahala Guthrie declared that Daniel Archer died from the effects of a wound received at the Battle of Thompson Station 5 Mar 1863 and typhoid pneumonia.
In another paper without heading, Mahala swore that Daniel died from the effects of a wound received in the Battle of Thompson Station, Pulaski, TN on 5 March 1863. This paper was witnessed by Joseph Faulk and Lucinda Stanley.
A Cause of Death Report signed by Lewis Puckett, Capt., Co. John W. Griffith was born on 28 March 1828 in Indiana. He had a sister, Elizabeth, who was born about 1826 and was apparently unmarried in 1880..1
John married Manerva A. Stanley on 12 August 1875 at Greene County, Indiana. A license for the marriage was issued 20 Jul 1875 by David S. Whitaker, Greene Co. Clerk. The marriage was performed by Elder O. Winters. It is assumed that Manerva's second husband, John Middleton, had died before then..2,3
John was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana. He was 51, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household were John's wife, Manerva; 3 sons (Alonzo 21, Alexander 13, and Charles 9) presumably from a previous marriage; Manerva's son, John S. Duncan; John Griffith's sister, Elizabeth 54; and a servant, Celesta Middleton 21 probably a daughter from a previous marriage of Manerva's former husband, John Middleton.4
John appeared in the census of 1900 in the household of his grandson, Alonzo D. Price, at Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana. He was 79, born in Indiana. He was living in the household of his grandson Alonzo D. Price. His age was given as 79 and birthdate as March 1821. Although this birthdate seems to be too old to be the husband of Manerva Stanley and no evidence has been found of any children from this marriage, the subsequent death record in Owen County has an appropriate date of death so it is assumed that the age given in this census is incorrect.5
John died on 20 August 1902 in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana, at age 74. He died of acute nephritis of the kidneys..6 He was buried in the Bush Cemetery at Coal City, Owen County, Indiana.1
