John Stanley and Descendants
Stanley Family Antecedents
The earliest confirmed ancestor of this Stanley line is John Stanley. The first definite record of John is his marriage to Mary Ball, 16 May 1827, in Greene County, IN. They were married by a preacher named Richard Wright, church unknown.
There is a clear family line from John to date. A substantial amount of information is available on John from census and both Federal and local land records. Both John and Mary left wills and they are both buried with several of their children in the Stanley Cemetery NW of Worthington, IN. Based on his gravestone John was born on 14 Jan 1809 and died on 12 Jul 1871.
John and Mary lived the rest of their lives in Greene County. They appear in every census from 1830 through 1870. John's place of birth is listed as OH in 1850 but as TN in 1860 and 1870. The OH listing is dubious because Mary was definitely born in OH and the census taker may have assumed that John was too. John's place of birth is also shown on census listings for several of his children for 1870 and later but the results just add to the confusion. Two of his children say he was born in NC; another one says PA, VA, and IN in successive censuses. From this, the only thing that is sure is that he was born east of the Mississippi.
John and Mary had 12 children, only two of which were males. One of the sons died young so only one son, William, was left to carry the line forward in name. William died in 1874 leaving one son, John William by his first wife, and two sons by his second wife. By 1880, all of the male Stanley’s had left Greene County and Indiana.
I've been able to identify John's wife, Mary Ball, with a fairly high degree of certainty as Polly Ball born in Butler County, OH on 15 Oct 1810 (per census) or 1805 (per gravestone) and have a reasonably plausible explanation for her arrival in Greene County around 1820. She lived fairly close to the present site of the Stanley farm. So it seems very likely that she and John Stanley met in Greene County before their marriage. I've been able to trace her ancestry back a few generations before the trail gets lost in a continuing controversy among Ball researchers about the ancestry and descendants of a Zopher Ball in PA.
I've found no firm trace of "my" John Stanley prior to his marriage. An early history of Greene County lists John Stanley as one of the first settlers on Scaffold Prairie (Smith Twp) and as one of the first white persons in Jefferson Twp, both in Greene County. Another history says that Jefferson Twp. was first settled about 1817 and John Stanley arrived during the next few years. This same reference says that the first permanent settler in Smith Twp. arrived in 1820 and that John Stanley, among others, came at the same time or earlier. Since my John, born in 1809, was pretty young to be a settler in the 1817-1820 time frame, this raises the possibility that there was an earlier John Stanley who may have been the father of my John.
Another strand in this tangle is the marriage of a Sally M. H. Stanley to William Hewey on 16 Apr 1823 in Greene County. Sally was apparently under-age and her marriage was approved by her mother Betsy Robnet (or Robindte). Later the same year Betsy married Sipple Harvey in Greene County. Deeds show that Betsy Harvey, wife of Sipple Harvey, deeded 40 acres to her son, Dempsey Stanley, in 1826. So it seems definite that Sally and Dempsey were both children of Betsy. Presumably her name was Stanley in 1811 when Dempsey was born but in 1823 it was Robnet (and then Harvey), indicating that the father of Sally and Dempsey was out of the picture (presumably dead) by then.
Based on a number of land transactions back and forth and the close relationship of their farms, it seems very likely that Dempsey and John Stanley were closely related, probably brothers. If so, John may also have been a child of Betsy (?) Stanley Robinet Harvey. Pretty much is known about what happened to Betsy, Sally and Dempsey after that but no clues have been found as to their origins. In sharp contrast to John Stanley who apparently never left the family farm, Dempsey was pretty much of a rolling stone, moving from Greene County, IN (1830) to Schuyler County, IL (1840) to Appanoose County, IA (1850) to Greenwood County, KS (1860) and then back to Appanoose where he died in 1861.
This already confusing picture is clouded by the fact that Greene County was part of Sullivan County until 1821 and, naturally, all the records in Sullivan County burned up in the 1850’s. There were (and are) Stanley’s in Sullivan County, possibly several lines, and some of them were named John. But it has not been possible to establish a link with the Greene County branch. There is a grave of a Hannah Lloyd Stanley (1812-1831), daughter of John and Betsy Stanley, in Sullivan County less than 15 miles from the Stanley farm in Greene County But it seems most probable that her parents were John Stanley (Elijah, James, Thomas), 1777-1841, and Elizabeth Dicks, 1782-1841, who were known to have been in Sullivan County around 1830 and subsequently moved to Henry County, IN. This John and Elizabeth had another daughter, Mahalah, who married Aaron Stanley in 1826 in Vigo County, IN (close to both Sullivan and Greene) in a Quaker ceremony. Since the death of Elizabeth Dicks Stanley in 1841 is well recorded, there is no way that she could have been the Betsy ? Stanley Robinet Harvey, mother of Sally, John, and Dempsey Stanley.
Putting all this together, it's possible to speculate that there was a John Stanley who married a Betsy (?) about 1803 in Tennessee (where John may have been born). They had at least 3 children; Sally (1805), John (1809), and Dempsey (1811). Between 1815 and 1820 they had moved to Sullivan/Greene County, IN, settling first in Smith Twp. and then moving to Jefferson Twp. By 1823, the first John was dead, Betsy had married a Robinet(?), and then he had died also. Sally married and Betsy re-married in 1823 and the rest is history. But there is no hard evidence to tie this story together.
Several Family Trees on Ancestry.com have identified John's parents as John Stanley and Betsy Reynolds who were married in Greene County, Tennessee on 17 November, 1806 (q.v.) But no definite link has been identified between these individuals and the Stanley family in Indiana other than the similarity in names and the date of marriage which fits nicely with the birth dates of John, Sally, and Dempsey Stanley who grew up in Indiana. As a result, the relationship between this John and Betsy Stanley with John Stanley 1809 must be considered possible but not proven. If they are truly the parents of John Stanley 1809, they may also be the parents of Hannah Lloyd Stanley (1812-1831) who is buried in Sullivan County not far from the Stanley farm but she is apparently not included in the 1830 Census for the Stanley family.
John Stanley was born on 14 January 1809 in Tennessee.1,2,3
John married Mary Ball on 16 May 1827 in Greene County, Indiana. The marriage was performed by Richard Wright, Preacher. John is listed as John Standley in his marriage license but as John Stanly in the marriage affidavit.4
Mary Ball was born on 11 August 1809 in Ohio. Her ancestry may be traced back several generations to a Zopher Ball in Pennsylvania and possibly back to England. Her father, Isaiah Ball, died about 1815 and her mother, Phebe Breese, re-married Enoch Morris. About 1819, Phebe and Enoch, together with Mary, moved to Greene County, Indiana and settled near the eventual Stanley farm. Mary died in 1875 and is buried in the Stanley Cemetery on the original farm site.
A few days after his marriage, John bought 40 acres consisting of the E1/2 SE1/4, Sec.17, T8N R5W in Smith Township (now Jefferson Township) for $50 from Alexander Craig of Greene County. The deed was filed on May 21, 1827. It is noteworthy that Betsey Harvey had given the adjacent W1/2 to her son Dempsey Stanley in 1826 and filed the deed on the same day as this one..5 Shortly thereafter, on 1 April 1829, John purchased the W1/2 SE1/4 of Sec. 17 from Dempsey Stanley for $100.6
John was listed as the head of household in the 20-30 age group in the 1830 Census in Greene County, Indiana. Included in the household was one female in the 15-20 age group, presumably John's wife, Mary, and 2 females under 5 years old, presumably his daughters, Martha Patsy and Elizabeth..7
On 17 September, 1832, John purchased 40 acres of land in NE1/4 SW1/4 Sec1 T8N R6W from the Federal Government for $50. Patent 3689 was issued for this land on 5 September 1835.8
A short time later, on 28 December, 1832, John purchased 36.66 acres of land in SE1/4 NW1/4 S1 T8N R5W from the Federal Government. Patent 4304 was issued for the land on 1 October 1835.9
On 26 Apr 1836, John purchased 80.37 acres of land in W1/2 SW1/4, Sec. 7, T8N R5W for $100 from the Federal Government. Patent 12184 was issued on 7 Nov 1837.10
Also on 26 Apr 1836, John purchased 80 acres in the E1/2 NE1/4 Sec.12 T8N R6W (including the present Stanley Cemetery) and also 80 acres in the E1/2 NW1/4 Sec.12 T8N R6W for $160 from the Federal Government. Patent 12183 was issued for the land on 8 Nov 1837..11
John bought 40 acres in Sec. 12 T8N R6W (probably the NW1/4 NE1/4) for $100 from Dempsey and Margaret Stanley on 3 January 1838.12
On 18 July 1836, John purchased another 40 acres in SW1/4 NE1/4 Sec. 12 T8N R6W from the Federal Government for $50. Patent 14318 for the land was issued on 1 Sep 1838.13
John was listed as the head of household in the 30-40 age group age group in the 1840 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. Included in the household were 1 female aged 20-30, presumably his wife Mary; 1 unknown female aged 15-20; 2 females aged 10-15, presumably his daughters Martha Patsy and Elizabeth; 2 females aged 5-10, presumably his daughters Martha and Mary; 1 male ages 5-10, presumably his son William; 1 female under 5, presumably his daughter Mahala; and 1 male under 5, presumably his son John Jr..14
John Darnell, a friend of John William Stanley as a youth, indicated that "there was only one man that you could borrow money from in the mid-1800's. He was John Stanley, the hardest worker that ever was in Greene County. He had plenty to do for all the land was in timber then."
"Nearly every winter he built a flatboat and when the spring floods came, he loaded and started to New Orleans to sell the boat and cargo. He always made the trip in safety, but many others were sunk on the way down."
"On his last trip John sold boat and goods for $1,600 in silver. He put his silver money in a barrel, loaded it on a north-bound steamboat on which he rode to Louisville, where he left his barrel in a warehouse. From there he walked home (114 miles per WES!), got his team and wagon, went back to Louisville, got his money and brought it home."
"That's what one had to do to get his money."
"John Stanley bought the first iron cook stove that was brought to Greene County, but what happened to that I must not tell now."
Alas, no subsequent article has been found.15
An almost identical story was published by Robert Weems in the Indiana Magazine of History:
"John Stanley, a pioneer citizen of the Point Commerce community, used to raise corn and hogs and ship his products to New Orleans by flatboat. He built his own boat, loaded it with his own corn and pork and acted as his own pilot and business manager. He cooked and lived on the boat as he floated downstream to the great southern market. On reaching New Orleans he would sell the cargo, retaining his cooking utensils, ropes, block and tackle, which he brought back for the next trip."
"Once he sold a load of produce for $1,500 and received his money in silver. This he put into a barrel, piled the ropes, pans, and skillets in on top of it and shipped it by boat to Louisville. There the barrel, with its valuable contents, was stored in a warehouse and left. There the barrel stood, with no one to guard it; no one knew what the barrel contained."
"Mr. Stanley walked to Point Commerce, took his four-horse team and drove to Louisville, loaded his barrel into the wagon with a quantity of merchandise he had bought and returned. On reaching home Mr. Stanley unloaded his barrel, dumped its contents on the barn floor, and lo! his bags of money were there, safe and untouched. He hid his money in some 'gums' of seed wheat, where it lay for several months, until Mr. Stanley invested it in land. There were no banks near and as no one but the owner knew that the money was there it was safe."16
On 30 July 1847, John purchased 84.8 acres of land in S1/2 of the NE1/4 Sec. 4, T7N R6W from the Federal Government. Patent 33771 for the land was issued on 10 May 1848.17 Shortly thereafter, on 1 July 1848, he received a patent on an additional 40 acres in the SW1/4 SW1/4 Sec. 3, T7N, R6W from the Federal Government.18
John was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census at Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 41, born in Ohio, and listed as a farmer with $3000 real estate. Included in the household were John's wife Mary, age 40 born in Ohio and his children Martha (presumably Martha Patsy) age 20; William age 15 listed as a farmer; John age 14; Mahala age 11; Manerva age 9; Katharine age 5; Margaret age 2, and Lucinda age 1. Also in the household was William Simons, age 1, the son of John's daughter Martha, and a Thomas Hart, age 20, listed as a farmer and no known relation. Missing from the household were Martha who was married about 1848 and may have died before 1850, and Mary who was married in 1849.19
On14 January 1860 John and Mary Stanley gave to Mahala Archer, their daughter, for $1 and her love and affection 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4, Sec 4, T7, R6. The deed was filed on 12 Apr 1860.20
John was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County. He was 52, born in Tennessee, and listed as a farmer with $4000 real estate. In addition to the real estate, John had $4,000 personal property. Included in the household were John's wife Mary and his children Catharine, Margaret, Lucinda, and Emily. Also in the household were William Simons, age 12, son of John's deceased daughter Martha; and Elizabeth Archer, daughter of John's deceased daughter Mary (Elizabeth's name is reported as Isabell in other records).21
John made a will on 18 November 1869 at Greene County, Indiana. It was admitted for probate on 27 July 1871. John's will lists his wife, Mary and 6 children, William Stanley, Mahala Archer, Manerva Middleton, Margaret Fulk, Lucinda Fulk, and Emily Stanley. It also lists as heirs 2 grandchildren, William Simminds (sic) and Isabell Archer, and the children of deceased daughters Betsy Drake and Patsy Harvey. Rice Elgan was appointed executor.22
John was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census at Jefferson Township, Greene County. He was 61, born in Tennessee, and listed as a farmer with $9,260 real estate. In addition to the real estate, John had $4,000 personal property. Included in the household were John's wife Mary, age 60, born in Ohio; his daughter Emily, age 18; his grandsons Albert, age 4, and James, age 2, the sons of John's deceased daughter Martha Patsy Stanley; and a granddaughter Sarah Drake, age 15, the daughter of John's deceased daughter Elizabeth Stanley.23
John died on 12 July 1871 on the Stanley farm, near Worthington, Indiana, at age 62.24,3 He was buried in the Stanley Cemetery next to the family farm. John had previously dedicated ground for this cemetery and many of his family are buried here.25,26

The Ohio listing is dubious because his wife was definitely born there and the census taker may well have assumed John was also. John's place of birth is shown on the census results for several of his children in 1870 and later but two children say he was born in North Carolina and another says Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Indiana in successive censuses.

The marriage between John Stanley and Mary Ball (and between Sally Stanley and William Huey) was mentioned among the early marriages in Jefferson Township by both Baber and Goodspeed.
The identification of Mary Ball of Greene Co., IN, w/o John Stanley, with Polly Ball of Butler Co., OH, d/o Isaiah Ball is based on several pieces of circumstantial evidence, including:
a) Although Polly Ball is identified as such in all guardianship papers in Butler Co., a final quitclaim deed signed by all heirs of Isaiah Ball in 1827 clearly identifies her as Mary (the same deed identifies her sister, known as Patty in guardianship papers, as Martha);
b) Although most land transactions in Greene Co. in which the wife of John Stanley relinquishes her dower rights identify her as Mary, one deed in 1834 identifies her as Polly;
c) A number of mutual land transactions in Greene Co. between the John Stanley family and the John Ball family, together with their close living proximity and the burial of most of their respective family members in the Stanley Cemetery imply a close relationship between John Ball, known to be a son of Isaiah Ball, and Mary Ball, wife of John Stanley.
d) Census data and other information make it clear that the mother of Polly Ball, together with her 2nd husband, Enoch Morris, moved to Greene Co. about 1819 and settled near the eventual Stanley home site. It now appears that Mary/Polly Ball and Martha/Patty Ball accompanied them to Greene Co. This provides an explanation for the presence of Mary Ball and Martha Ball when they were married in 1827 and 1833, resp., since there were no other Ball families in the area at the time. Shortly thereafter, John Ball moved to Greene Co. from Parke Co. where he had married, apparently to be near his mother and two sisters.
e) A review of various Ball family lines reveals at least 5 other instances in which a girl was named Mary Polly or changed names between the two.
On the weight of the evidence it seems reasonable to assume that Polly Ball and Mary Ball were actually the same person. - [S1183] Greene County Deed Record (SLC), Greene Co., IN Deed. Deed Book A-E, SLC MF 13179878-79-80.

M, b. 13 April 1811, d. 31 May 1861
Father | Unknown Stanley b. c 1785, d. c 1823 |
Mother | Elizabeth Unknown b. c 1778?, d. b 1840 |
Dempsey was born on 13 April 1811.1,2
On 1 April 1829, Dempsey sold the W1/2 SE1/4 Sec.17, T8N R5W, Jefferson Township (then Smith Township), Greene County, Indiana, to John Stanley for $100. Benjamin Hewey was the J.P..3 A letter Merl Spainhower-W.E. Stanley 28 Jul 1982 indicates that the Spainhower property existing in 1982 (Sec 12, Jefferson Township) is part of the land originally purchased from the Government by John and Dempsey Stanley. Much information said to be available i nthe owners abstracts.
In all, Dempsey participated in the following land transactions in Greene County, Indiana, between 1826 and 1843:
- 28 Nov 1826. Received 40 acres in Sec 17, Twp 8N, Rge 5W as a gift from Sipple and Betsy Harvey. The deed identifies Dempsey as "son of said Betsy Harvey". Sold to John Stanley on 1 Apr 1829 (all sold);
- 26 Apr 1836. Bought 80 acres in Sec 8, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from the US. With his wife Margaret, he sold 30 acres to Sipple Harvey and 10 acres to John Stanley on 1 Feb 1837 (40 acres unsold?);
- 26 Apr 1836. Bought 40 acres in Sec 18, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from the US. With his wife Margaret, he sold it all to Sipple Harvey on 1 Jan 1837 (all sold);
- 23 May 1836. Bought 73.55 acres in Sec 1, Twp 8N, Rge 6W from the US. With his wife Margaret, he sold 73.54 acres to John Stanley on ? Feb 1837 (all sold);
- 3 Feb 1837. Bought 40 acres in Sec 5, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from the US (shown as Dempsey Standley) (all sold to James Harvey 8 Feb 1840?);
- 8 Jul 1837. Bought 50 acres in Sec 5, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from John & Nancy Shoemaker. With his wife Margaret, he sold 80 acres (incl 3 Feb 1837 purchase) to James Harvey on 8 Feb 1840 (all sold to James Harvey);
- 14 Nov 1837. Bought 40 acres in Sec 12, Twp 8N, Rge 6W from the US. With his wife Margaret, he sold 40 acres to John Stanley on 3 Jan 1838 (all sold);
- 27 Apr 1838. Bought 15 acres in Sec 6, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from John Barton. With his wife Margaret, he sold 15 acres to James Harvey on 8 Feb 1840 (all sold);
- 15 Sept 1843. Bought 75 acres in Sec 6, Twp 8N, Rge 5W from Nancy Shoemaker, widow of John Shoemaker (75 acres unsold). Both Dempsey and Nancy Shoemaker are listed as from Lee County, Iowa Territory.
Dempsey's land apparently remaining after Sept 1843 was 40 acres in Sec 8, Twp 8N, Rge 5W and 75 acres in Sec 6, Twp 8N, Rge 5W.4 Dempsey married Margaret [--?--] Stanley sometime before 1830. .5
Dempsey was listed as the head of household in the 15-20 age group in the 1830 Census at Greene County, Indiana. His name is given as Demps Stanley in the Census. Included in the household was one female in the 15-20 age group, presumably Dempsey's wife, Margaret..6
On 26 April 1836, Dempsey purchased 80 acres of land in SW1/4 SW1/4 S8 & NE1/4 NE1/4 S18 T8N R5W from the Federal Government. Patent 12186 issued for the land on 7 November 1837.7

. He sold property to John Stanley on 3 January 1838 at Jefferson Township, Greene Co., Indiana.9
On 14 Nov 1837, Dempsey purchased 40 acres of land in NW1/4 NE1/4 S12 T8N R5W from the Federal Government. Patent 22,573 was issued for the land on 1 August 1839.10
Dempsey was listed as the head of household in the 20-30 age group in the 1840 Census at Precinct 3, Schuyler County, Illinois. Included in the household was one female age 20-30, presumably Dempsey's wife Margaret ?; one male age 10-15, presumably his son Jeptha; two males 5-10, presumably his sons James and John; and two males under 5, presumably his sons David and Alexander..11
Dempsey married Chlotilda Ellington on 4 March 1847 at Appanoose County, Iowa. Dempsey's age is given as 36 in the marriage record..12
Dempsey was a farmer, business man, and JP in Appanoose County. He was an official of an election held in Chariton Township in the spring of 1849, having settled there some time previously. He moved from Iowa to Greenwood County, Kansas some time after 1852 and then returned to Iowa after 1860.13
Dempsey was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Independence Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. He was 39, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer with $1200 real estate. He is shown as Dempsy with no last name in the Census but can be positively identified by the rest of the family. Included in the household were Dempsey's wife Clotilda, age 36 TN; Jeptha, farmer age 20 IA(?) with $200 real property; James, farmer age 18 IA(?); James, farmer age 18 IA(?); John, age 16 IL; David C., age 14 IA(?); Alexander, age 12 IA(?); Sarah E., age 8 IA; Jasper D., age 6 IA; and Margaret E., age 2 IA. Also included in the household were John J. Faughn(?), age 11 IL; Martha J. Faughn(?), age 9 IL; Mary E. Ellington, age 7 IL; and Elisha Shadrich, 19, a laborer, birthplace not stated.
Mary Ellington is presumably the sister or child from a previous marriage of Clotilda Ellington, making it virtually certain that Dempsy is the Dempsey Stanley who married her in 1847. Mary Ellington was also listed in the household of James Banks in 1860, living right next door to the Dempsey Stanley family in Greenwood Co., KS.
John and Martha Faughn(?) may be relatives of Dempsey's first wife, Margaret. Elisha Shadrich is presumed to be a farm worker living with the family.14 Dempsey was listed at Appanoose County, Iowa, in the State Census in 1852. Included in the household were 7 males and 6 females..15,16
Dempsey was listed as the head of household in the 1856 Iowa State Census in Independence Township, Appanoose County. He was 46, born in Illinois, and listed as a merchant. Included in the household were his wife, Chlotilda (42); and 9 children,Alexander (18), Sarah E (14)' Mary E (13), Imper (12), Francis E (11). Malisa (7), Margarette (8), Murrey(?) (5), and William (3.)17
Dempsey was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Eureka Township., Greenwood County, Kansas. He was 49, born in Illinois, and listed as a farmer with $1000 property. He is shown in the Census as D. Stanly. Included in the household were Dempsey's wife Clotilda, age 46 TN; his sons Jasper, farmer age 16 IA, and William, age 8 IA; and his daughters Margaret, age 12 IA, and Manerva, age 10 IA. Apparently living in the same household were Frank Ely (16, farmer), Ann Ely (13), Daniel Ely (22, farmer), and John Ely (20, farmer).18
Dempsey died on 31 May 1861 in Independence Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 50.19,20 He was buried in the Milledgeville Cemetery at Milledgeville, Appanoose County, Iowa.21,20 Dempsey's will was probated circa 1861 at Appanoose County, Iowa. Although the probate of his estate is recorded, no copy of a will has been found per Jean Paneitz..22

Hannah Lloyd Stanley
F, b. 12 January 1812, d. 14 June 1831
Hannah's ancestry is uncertain. The only known information on her is from a gravestone in Pleasant Green Cemetery, Sullivan Co., IN which specifies that she is the daughter of John & Betsey Stanley. It seems most probably that her parents were John Stanley (Elijah, James, Thomas), 1777-1841, and Elizabeth Dicks, 1782-1841 who were known to have been in Sullivan Co. around 1830 and subsequently moved to Henry Co., IN. John and Elizabeth's daughter, Mahalah, married Aaron Stanley in 1826 in Vigo Co., IN.
It also seems quite significant that the wife of John Stanley's cousin, Mahlon Stanley, was named Hannah Lloyd, almost certainly the origin of the name of the person buried in Pleasant Green.
Hannah's grave in Pleasant Green Cemetery is 10-15 miles from land owned by the Greene Co. Stanley's at that time. It seems quite unlikely that she is directly related to this Stanley line. Hannah was born on 12 January 1812. Date of birth calculated from age at death on gravestone.1
Hannah died on 14 June 1831 at age 19.2 Her body was interred in June 1831 at the Pleasant Green Cemetery, Sullivan County, Indiana. Gravestone is badly weathered but appears to read "Hannah Lloyd", "Dau of", "John & Betsy STANLEY", "Died", "June 14, 1831", "AGED", "19 yrs 5 mos, 2 d".3

Father | Unknown Stanley b. c 1785, d. c 1823 |
Mother | Elizabeth Unknown b. c 1778?, d. b 1840 |
Sally was probably born about 1807.
Several Family Trees on Ancestry.com have identified Sally's parents as John Stanley and Betsy Reynolds who were married in Greene County, Tennessee on 17 November, 1806 (q.v.) But no definite link has been identified between these individuals and the Stanley family in Indiana other than the similarity in names and the date of marriage which fits nicely with the birth dates of John, Sally, and Dempsey Stanley who all grew up in Indiana. As a result, the relationship between this John and Betsy Stanley in Tennessee with Sally Stanley must be considered possible but not proven..1
Sally married William Hewey on 16 April 1823 in Greene County, Indiana. The license for Sally and William to marry, dated 15 Apr 1823, was agreed to by Betsey Robnet (mother of Sally) and Nancy Hewey (mother of William).
This marriage between Sally Stanley and William Huey was mentioned among the early marriages in the township..2
Sally probably appeared in the census of 1830 in the household of her husband William Hewey at Greene County, Indiana. She was in the 20-30 age group.3
Based on her husband's remarriage, Sally probably died about 1836 at the age of 29.4

Mary Ball was born on 11 August 1809 in Ohio, the daughter of Isaiah Ball and Phoebe Breese.1,2 In her early life in Ohio, Mary was usually known as Polly Ball but she was identified as Mary almost exclusively in Indiana.3
As a minor orphan, Mary was made the ward of Dennis Ball in August 1816. She was described as a heir of Isaiah Ball. According to the guardianship record, Polly was 7 on August 11 instant (1816) and was to remain a ward until she was 12. On 30 October, 1823, under a new law, Dennis Ball's guardianship was extended until Polly, then 14, was 18 years old. John Line provided surety for the guardianship..4
It is believed that Mary accompanied her mother, Phebe Breeze, and her step-father, Enoch Morris, when they moved from Ohio to Greene County, Indiana about 1819 and settled near the eventual site of the Stanley farm.5
Mary married John Stanley on 16 May 1827 in Greene County, Indiana. The marriage was performed by Richard Wright, Preacher. John is listed as John Standley in his marriage license but as John Stanly in the marriage affidavit.6
On 24 September 1827, Mary Ball, together with other heirs of Isaiah Ball, sold a quitclaim to land in the W1/2 Sec. 15 T2 R3 between the Miami Rivers in the County of Butler (as defined by metes and bounds) to Zopher J. Ball for $100 .7
Mary was probablylisted (identified by age group) in the US Censuses of 1830 and 1840 in the household of her husband, in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana.8
Mary appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of her husband John Stanley at Jefferson Township, Indiana. She was 40, born in Ohio.9
Mary waslisted in the US Censuses of 1850, 1860, and 1870 in the household of her husband, at Jefferson Township.10
Mary was named as an heir in the will of her husband, John Stanley, on 18 November 1869 at Greene County, Indiana.11
Mary made a will on 24 May 1875 in Greene County.12
Mary died on 25 June 1875 on the Stanley Farm near Worthington at Greene County at age 65.13,2 She was buried in the Stanley Cemetery at Greene County, Indiana.13,2

Per gravestone in Stanley Cemetery, Mary Ball died 25 Jun 1875, aged 70Y 8M 10D. Calc'd date of birth = 15 Oct 1804. But all census reports show birth date about 1810. Leamon Family History (Doc.L-3) shows born in 1805 but undoubtedly calc'd from gravestone. Accept guardianship date since much closer to actual date and entered in court records.

- [S333] Assumption:, Census data and other information make it clear that the mother of Polly Ball, together with her 2nd husband, Enoch Morris, moved to Greene Co. about 1819 and settled near the eventual Stanley home site.

The marriage between John Stanley and Mary Ball (and between Sally Stanley and William Huey) was mentioned among the early marriages in Jefferson Township by both Baber and Goodspeed.
The identification of Mary Ball of Greene Co., IN, w/o John Stanley, with Polly Ball of Butler Co., OH, d/o Isaiah Ball is based on several pieces of circumstantial evidence, including:
a) Although Polly Ball is identified as such in all guardianship papers in Butler Co., a final quitclaim deed signed by all heirs of Isaiah Ball in 1827 clearly identifies her as Mary (the same deed identifies her sister, known as Patty in guardianship papers, as Martha);
b) Although most land transactions in Greene Co. in which the wife of John Stanley relinquishes her dower rights identify her as Mary, one deed in 1834 identifies her as Polly;
c) A number of mutual land transactions in Greene Co. between the John Stanley family and the John Ball family, together with their close living proximity and the burial of most of their respective family members in the Stanley Cemetery imply a close relationship between John Ball, known to be a son of Isaiah Ball, and Mary Ball, wife of John Stanley.
d) Census data and other information make it clear that the mother of Polly Ball, together with her 2nd husband, Enoch Morris, moved to Greene Co. about 1819 and settled near the eventual Stanley home site. It now appears that Mary/Polly Ball and Martha/Patty Ball accompanied them to Greene Co.
- [S238] Butler County Deed Book,.

Father | Benjamin Hewey b. c 1775, d. 11 Sep 1839 |
Mother | Nancy [--?--] Hewey b. 1777?, d. a 1830 |
William Hewey was born circa 1807.1
A William Hewey was one of the early cotton planters in 1824. However, he was probably an uncle since this William was only about 17 at the time.2
William married Sally M. H. Stanley on 16 April 1823 in Greene County, Indiana. The license for Sally and William to marry, dated 15 Apr 1823, was agreed to by Betsey Robnet (mother of Sally) and Nancy Hewey (mother of William).
This marriage between Sally Stanley and William Huey was mentioned among the early marriages in the township..3
William was listed as the head of household in the 20-30 age group in the 1830 Census at Greene County, Indiana. Included in the household were a female 20-30, presumably his first wife Sally (Stanley); one son 5-10, possibly Andrew Jackson; one son 0-5, possibly John; and two daughters 0-5, possibly Polly and an unidentified girl. William and Sally are listed adjacent to John Stanley in the 1830 Census.
Another William Hewey in the 20-30 age group is listed in the 1830 Census living by himself in Greene County but is almost certainly a different person.4
William married Sally Woods on 1 January 1837 in Greene County, Indiana.5
Wm was listed as the head of household in the 40-50 age group in the 1840 Census at Greene County, Indiana. This age group appears to be incorrect based on the other censuses. Included in the household were a female 20-30, presumably his second wife Sally (Woods); a son 15-20, possibly Andrew Jackson; two daughters 15-20, possibly Polly and an unidentified girl; a son 10-15, possibly John; two unidentified girls 10-15 and 5-10; and two boys 0-5, possibly Benjamin and Harrison..6
Subsequently, William married Martha Drake on 23 March 1845 at Greene County, Indiana.7
William was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 43, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household were his third wife, Martha (29, NC); 4 sons, Benjamin (15), Harrison (11), Philander (6), and Lafayette (4/12); Martha's sister, Louisa Drake (23); and an unidentifed boy, John Williams (10).8
William was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 60, born in North Carolina, and listed as a farmer with $200 real estate and $186 personal property. He was alone in the household.9
William may have appeared in the census of 1870 in the household of his son-in-law, Frank Kelsheiner, at Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 70, born in North Carolina. Included in the household was his daughter, Mary (34), wife of Frank Kelsheiner, and their child, Dilla (12, IN). However, there is considerable doubt about this entry since this Mary does not appear as a daughter of this Wiliam Hewey in any previous census. The William Hewey in this record may have been the early cotton planter mentioned in 1824.10
