Both the WPA Marriage Index 1821-1920 and Charles Franklin's booklet on Early Greene County Marriages 1845-1852 list a marriage of Mary Hanley to Michael Archer on 14 Jan 1849. Cemetery: There is considerable uncertainty about the birth and death dates for Mary Stanley established from gravestone in Stanley Cemetery. Dad's 1941 cemetery list shows Mary, wife of M. Archer, died in 1874. Spainhower list in 1982 shows Mary, wife of D. Archer died in 1874. Published list from 1984 shows Mary, wife of D. Archer, died in 1854. Mary is buried next to John & Mary Stanley so it's logical to assume that she was a Stanley child. The 1854 date of death is the most plausible since Mary Stanley married Michael Archer in 1849 and the 1850 Census for Smith Township shows Mary Archer, age 17, living with Michael Archer which is consistent with her indicated age of death in 1854..

Martha probably appeared in the census of 1840 in the household of her father John Stanley in Jefferson Township, Indiana. She was in the 5-10 age group.3

Martha is thought to have married Unknown Simons about 1848 based on the birth of their son, William A. Simons, about that time.4

The date of Martha's death is unknown. She may have died in childbirth about 1849 since her son, Wm. A. Simons, was living with his grandparents in the 1850 Census at age 1. She is not buried in the Stanley Cemetery.

Martha Patsy Stanley was born on 15 September 1829? On the Stanley farm in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. She was also known as Patsy in the family. She was named Patsy Harvey in her father's will drafted in 1869 after her death but identified as Martha Harvey in her mother's will in 1875..2

Martha Patsy appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of her father John Stanley at Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. She was 20, born in Indiana.3

Martha Patsy probably appeared in the censuses of 1830 4, 18405 and 18503 in the household of her father, John Stanley, in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. Presumably she was in the under 5 age group in 1830 and in the 10-15 age group in 1840. She was 20 in 1850, born in Indiana.

Martha married Alfred Harvey on 1 June 1854 in Greene County, Indiana.6

Martha appeared in the census of 1860 in the household of her husband Alfred Harvey at Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. She was 34, born in Indiana.7

Martha died on 18 December 1867 in Indiana at age 38. Since her last child, James A. Harvey, was born about the same time, it is possible that Martha died in childbirth..8,9 She was buried in the Stanley Cemetery.2,9

..Mary Ball Stanley's will identifies both Martha Harvey and Martha Simons as daughters
..John Stanley's will identifies Patsy Harvey as daughter and lists Wm. Simons as grandson
..1850 Census shows only one Martha Stanley in Stanley household at age 20. She must have been Martha Patsy before marriage to Alfred Harvey in 1854 and Martha Stanley Simons must have married before 1850.

William Stanley

FatherJohn Stanley b. 14 Jan 1809, d. 12 Jul 1871
MotherMary Ball b. 11 Aug 1809, d. 25 Jun 1875
William Stanley was born circa 1835 in Indiana.1 William was listed in the US Censuses of 1840 and 1850 in the household of his father, John Stanley, in Jefferson Township, Greene County.2

William appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of his father John Stanley at Jefferson Township, Indiana. He was 15, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer.3 He was a witness to the will of John Barton on 10 May 1854.4

William appeared in the census 1860 in the household of his brother-in-law,John Rogers, in Smith Township, Greene County, together with his sister Manerva and their family. He was 26, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer with $1600 real estate and $741 personal property. The Rogers household was located next to the household of William's uncle, John Ball.5

A marriage license for William Stanley and Nancy Vanlandingham was issued on 17 October 1860 by the Greene County Circuit Court and witnessed by John Milani, County Clerk. They were married on 18 October 1860 in Greene County by John Pegg, JP.6

On 12 December 1860 William purchased from Daniel and Mahala Archer for $350 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, Sec 4, T7, R6. This was the same land that Mahala had received from her parents, John and Mary Stanley, a few months before.7

William was enlisted in Co. K, 85th Indiana Volunteers on 12 August 1862 in Jasonville, Greene Co., Indiana, only a few miles from the Stanley farm near Worthington' His two uncles, John Lafayette and William A Vanlandingham enlisted in the same regiment at the same time. John was mustered in on 2 September 1862 at Terre Haute. At the time, he was 28, had grey eyes and light hair. He was 5-10 with a light complexion.

The company, predominantly men from Clay and Greene Counties, was organized by Capt. Lewis Puckett at Coffee, Clay County, Indiana. Together with the rest of the 85th Indiana, the Company was trained briefly at Camp Dick Thompson, Terre Haute, Indiana before the men were mustered into US service on 2 September 1862. The Regiment was then ordered to Covington, KY to help defend Cincinnati against advancing Confederate forces under Bragg and Kirby Smith. In Kentucky, the 85th was stationed at Camp Lew Wallace on the south bank of the Ohio River where it was engaged in drilling and working on the fortifications.

The Confederate forces reached within 18 miles of Cincinnati before they began to withdraw. Federal forces under Buell began to advance on 1 October 1862. Col. Colburn of the 33rd Indiana assumed command of a brigade containing both the 33rd and 85th Indiana with two other regiments on 3 October. The 85th Indiana began to move south into Kentucky on 16 October, reaching a position around Lexington and Frankfort by the end of October. It continued to move south slowly, reaching the Danville area by the end of the year. Finally, on 26 January 1863, Colburn’s Brigade completed its service in Kentucky and left Danville for Louisville to reinforce Rosecran’s army in Tennessee. The brigade marched through snow and sleet for 4 ½ days to reach Louisville on 30 January. From there, the brigade traveled by boat to Nashville, arriving there on 24 February 1863 after stopping at Evansville, Indiana to remove the sick to hospitals.

Coburn’s Brigade remained near Nashville until 21 February when it marched south to Brentwood, Tennessee, about half way between Nashville and Franklin. It remained at Brentwood until 2 March 1863 when it moved south into Franklin. At that point, after about 6 months of service, about sixty men of the 85th Indiana had died although the regiment had not yet been in combat.

According to an Adjutant General’s report included in Mary Stanley’s pension papers, William Stanley was reported AWOL since 24 January 1863 and was subsequently dropped from the rolls of the regiment. At that time, the regiment was still at Danville, Kentucky before beginning the march to Louisville. However, an affidavit from Capt. Lewis Puckett, commanding William Stanley’s Co. K, states that William Stanley contracted chronic diarrhea on the march from Nashville to Franklin about 25 February. These dates are in conflict. Possibly William became sick on the march from Danville to Louisville and was left as sick in the hospital in Evansville. In any case, he apparently did not rejoin the company in 1863.

After reaching Franklin, Coburn’s Brigade became isolated on the continuing march south and was attacked by a greatly superior Confederate force at Thompson Station on 5 March 1863. After a prolonged battle, the brigade was forced to surrender and most of the men were taken prisoner. The captured men were taken to the notorious Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia where they remained until they were exchanged in June 1863. Because of a general lack of confidence in the unit, the brigade was assigned mainly to garrison duty and guarding the railroad until the unit went into winter quarters. The 85th Indiana was stationed at Fosterville, Tennessee where it spent its time drilling and guarding the railroad until about 23 February 1864.

By 13 March, the 85th Indiana was at La Vergne, Tennessee where it continued to be plagued by disease in the cold weather. On 12 April, the regiment was relieved as railroad guard and ordered to join the army that Sherman was assembling near Chattanooga for the invasion of Georgia. It left La Vergne on 20 April and marched across the mountains, arriving at Lookout Valley on 2 May.

Apparently William Stanley rejoined the regiment at Fosterville where he answered present on 4 January 1864. The roll remarks that he had returned from desertion. However, during May/June, the roll indicates that he was absent sick in Evansville, Indiana so he apparently did not complete the march to Chattanooga. Although it is not clear, it appears that he did not rejoin the regiment again before the end of the war.

Coburn’s Brigade remained with Sherman for the rest of the war, serving with distinction in the Atlanta campaign, the march across Georgia to the sea at Savannah, and then north through the Carolinas when the war ended. Before returning home, the brigade participated in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, DC on 24 May, 1865. On 8 June 1865, 135 recruits of the 85th Indiana were assigned to the 33rd Indiana and the rest of the regiment was mustered out in Washington on 12 June. From Washington, the regiment moved by rail and steamboat to Cincinnati, then to Indianapolis by rail, and finally back home to Terre Haute. A total of 1,115 officers and men served in the regiment of which 41 died in battle and 164 died of disease.

The muster out roll of the 85th Indiana on 12 June 1865 indicates that William had been tried by court martial for desertion, found guilty, and sentenced to forfeit all pay while absent and to make good his term of enlistment. He was transferred to the 33rd Indiana in June, 1865 to serve out his term. (Per History of Greene & Sullivan, p.157, the same was true for his brother-in-law, John Vanlandingham).

William was discharged at Louisville, Kentucky on 21 July 1865 (note that total service was less than 3 years despite the extension of his time).8,9

As of 1863, William Stanley lived in Madison Township, Washington County, Indiana.10

A petition for divorce was apparently filed by William's wife Nancy sometime after 1862 when their son, John William, was born and William enlisted in the Civil War and 1866 when he married Mary Jane Pugh. The petition may have been filed while William was still in the Army. The divorce may not have taken place because the petition was continued in March 1871 and finally dismissed in April 1871 on the motion of Nancy's attorney.11 After Nancy's death, William married Mary Jane Pugh on 21 October 1866 at Greene County, Indiana. William and Mary Jane were married by W. C. Andrews, JP..12,13

William was named as an heir in the will of his father, John Stanley, on 18 November 1869 at Greene County, Indiana.14

William was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census in Greene County. He was 33, born in Indiana, and listed as a farmer with $300 property. Included in the household were his wife, Mary J; his wife's 2 children by a previous marriage (Lydia B. & Elanso); William's son John with his first wife Nancy; and 2 children with his second wife Mary Jane (William D. & Dory).15

William died on 2 February 1874 at Indiana. In a statement to the US Pension Office in 1883, William's doctor indicated that he died of typhoid resulting from pneumonia. Mary Jane's pension affidavit says William died from pneumonia caused by chronic diarrhea contracted in 1863 on a march from Nashville to Franklin, Tennessee. during the war. However, the pension file shows that his doctor stated that the pneumonia was caused by a cold contracted by lying out all night after a drunken spree. The pension was denied on the basis that his death was not related to his military service..8

He was buried in the Stanley Cemetery. The gravestone reads William Stanley, Died Feb. 2, 1874, Age 37 Years. "Weep not for me the bitter tear. I am not dead, but sleeping here. I was not yours, but Christ's alone. He loved me best and called me home" The footstone reads William Stanley, Co. K, 85 Ind. Inf..16,17

Mahala Stanley

F, b. 26 October 1839, d. 28 April 1872
FatherJohn Stanley b. 14 Jan 1809, d. 12 Jul 1871
MotherMary Ball b. 11 Aug 1809, d. 25 Jun 1875
Mahala Stanley was born on 26 October 1839 in Indiana.1

Mahala probably appeared in the census of 1840 in the household of her father John Stanley in Jefferson Township, Greene County. She was in the under 5 age group.2 She also appeared in her father's household in Jefferson Township in the census of 1850. She was 11, born in Indiana. 3

A marriage license for Mahala Stanley and Daniel Archer was obtained on 26 Aug 1857 from John Humphrey, Clerk. Mahala married Daniel on 27 August 1857 at Greene County, Indiana, They were married by John Smith, J.P..4

On14 January 1860 Mahala received from John and Mary Stanley, her parents, for $1 and her love and affection 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4, Sec 4, T7, R6. The deed was filed on 12 Apr 1860.5

Mahala appeared in the census of 1860 in the household of her husband Daniel Archer at Smith Township, Greene County, Indiana. She was 20, born in Indiana.6

On 12 December 1860 Daniel and Mahala Archer sold to William Stanley for $350 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, Sec 4, T7, R6. This was the same land that Mahala had received from her parents, John and Mary Stanley, a few months before.7

On 21 August 1861 Daniel and Mahala Archer sold to James Britton for $150 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, Sec 14, T7, R6. This was the same land that Daniel had purchased for $130 on the same date. This deed was also filed on 21 Jan 1887.8

Per the Worthington Gazette on 13, 20, and 27 Aug 1863, a letter for Mahala Archer was in the Dead Letter Office.

Mahala applied for a Civil War Widow's Pension on 2 August 1863 at Greene County, Indiana, following the death of her husband, Daniel Archer, in the Civil War. Attached to the petition file were a copy of their marriage certificate; a report by the Adj General confirming Daniel's enlistment and death; and an affidavit by Louis Pickett, Capt Co. K, concerning Daniel's death as a prisoner of war. On 24 March 1864 Certificate 16986 was issued awarding Mahala Archer $8/month starting 22 Apr 1863..9

Mahala surrendered her Civil War Widow's pension and returned the certificate on 11 April 1866, presumably as the result of her marriage to John Guthrie.10

After Daniel's death in the Civil War, Mahala married John W. Guthrie on 11 April 1866 in Greene County, Indiana. Mahala and John were married by B. H. Blackwell, Preacher. The marriage of John W. Guthrie to Mahala Guthrie was certified in Mahala's application for a pension for the minor children of her deceased husband, Daniel Archer, on 23 Jan 1867 in Greene County, Indiana..11,12

Mahala was appointed guardian of her children; Lectia, David, and William Archer, on 25 October 1866 in Greene County. The guardianship was confirmed and continued by the Probate Court on 7 Jan 1867, 7 Sep 1870, and 8 Jan 1871.13

On 23 January 1867, Mahala applied for a Civil War pension for the minor children of her deceased husband, Daniel Archer. She had previously given up her own pension for his death. The pension papers include the certification of her guardianship of the children, her marriage to John Guthrie, and the birthdates of the children. The pension was granted on 2 Dec 1867 for $8/month plus $2/month for each of 3 children to begin 12 Apr 1886 and end 16 Aug 1878 when David Archer would be 16 years old (Certificate 114,220).12

Mahala filed for divorce from John W. Guthrie on 18 March 1867 at Greene County, Indiana. Mahala stated that she had been unacquainted with John before their marriage because he had been in the army for four years but that he had come from a good family. However, after the marriage "he manifested by his conduct that he was evil disposed and ill-tempered and commenced abusing her children and making threats against her, and that in some six weeks after their marriage he totally abandoned her without any just cause whatever and has entirely failed to make any provisions for the support of his family." She further stated that "since their marriage, she has learned that he is a desperate character and guilty of many high crimes and that he has been arrested, imprisoned, and broke jail on several occasions, and that at the present time he is a refugee from justice." The divorce filing includes an affidavit by Elihu E Rose that John Guthrie is not a Indiana resident; a notice to Guthrie to appear in court on 20 May; a summons to Jacob Archer, Eli Miller, and Caroline Miller to appear in court to testify; and an affidavit that a legal notice had been published on 20 March, 27 March, and 3 April 1867.

After the divorce, Mahala reverted to the Archer name for the most purposes, being shown as Mahala Archer in the 1870 Census and in Mary Stanley's will in 1875. She is also shown as Mahala Archer on the gravestone in the Stanley Cemetery.14

Following her divorce from John Guthrie, Mahala asked the Greene County Probate Court on 5 Set 1868 to appoint William Fulk guardian of Lutitia, William L, and Daniel Archer in her place. She filed a bond for $1,000 with Henry Winters as surety for her guardianship, The Court did not confirm the change in guardianship and continued the case.15

Mahala was named as an heir in the will of her father, John Stanley, on 18 November 1869 at Greene County, Indiana.16

Mahala was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census at Smith Township, Greene County, Indiana. She was 31, born in Indiana, and listed as a keeping house with $50 personal property. Mahala is listed as Mahala Archer in this Census following her divorce from John Guthrie in 1867. Included in the household were Mahala's three children; Electa, age 11; William L., age 9; and David A., age 6.17

Mahala was replaced as the guardian of her children by her brother-in-law, William A. Fulk, on 5 June 1871, probably because of poor health.18

Mahala died on 28 April 1872 at Indiana at age 32.19 She was buried in the Stanley Cemetery at Greene County.20,21

A marriage license for William Stanley and Nancy Vanlandingham was issued on 17 October 1860 by the Greene County Circuit Court and witnessed by John Milani, County Clerk. They were married on 18 October 1860 in Greene County by John Pegg, JP.3

Nancy apparently filed a petition for divorce from William Stanley some time after1862 when their son, John William, was born and William enlisted in the Civil War. The petition may have been filed while William was still in the Army. The divorce may not have taken place because the petition was continued in Oct 1863 and finally dismissed in April 1864 on the motion of Nancy's attorney.4

The date of Nancy's death is not known. Presumably she died between the birth of her son, John William Stanley, in April 1862 and the re-marriage of her husband, William Stanley, to Mary J. Pugh in October 1866. No gravestone has been located.

John married Susannah Huey on 30 March 1861 in Greene County, Indiana. John and Mary had at least five children, namely Maggie, George E., Charles, Henry, and Alice..5

John enlisted as a private in Company K, Indiana 85th Infantry Regiment on 12 August 1862 during the Civil War. He enlisted at the same time in the same regiment as his brother, William A, and his nephew, William Stanley.6

Apparently both John and William Vanlandingham, as well as William Stanley, must have gone AWOL at some time during the war. The Worthington Gazette on 20 Aug, 1863 states "John & Bill Vanlandigham, the two deserters, were again arrested on Friday last near Fairplay. They were handcuffed, taken to Terre Haute, and lodged in jail. It is thought that they will be shot - a fate which they justly deserve." (Note that name is slightly misspelled. John would have been 19 in 1863 but William Vanlandingham was only 15). Apparently he was not shot. The History of Greene & Sullivan Counties reports that John Vanlandingham was transferred from the 85th Regt to the 33rd Regt (as was William Stanley) to make up for lost time.7

Apparently, John married Mary G. Carver circa 1865. It is not known what happened to his first wife Susannah..8

John was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 25, born in Indiana, and listed as a laborer with $50 property. Included in the household were his wife, Mary G, (20, TN); a daughter, Maggie J. (4, IN); and a son, George E. (1, IN).9

John was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census in Fairplay Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 36, born in Indiana, and listed as a laborer. Included in the household were his wife, Mary (30,KY); 2 daughters, Maggie (14, IN), and Alice (11/12, IN); and 2 sons, Charles (8, IN) and Henry (7, IN).10

John died on 8 March 1918 in Kankakee, Kankakee County, Illinois.2 He was buried in the State Hospital Cemetery at Aroma Park, Kankakee County, Illinois.2
