William Vanlandingham

M, b. circa 1819, d. after 1860
William Vanlandingham was born circa 1819 at Kentucky.1 As of 1819, William Vanlandingham was also known as William Vanlaningham.2

William may have appeared in the census of 1820 in the household of William Vanlandingham, presumed to be his father. He was in the under 10 age group. Included in the household was a male 26-45, presumably his father; a female 26-45, presumably his mother; as well as 2 other males under 10 and 3 females under 10.3

William married Matilda [--?--] Vanlandingham in 1839?.4

William was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Posey Township, Washington County, Indiana. He was 31, born in Kentucky, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household were his wife, Matilda (39, IN); two Vanlaningham daughters, Mary E (10, IN) and Nancy (7, IN); and four children with a Layfayette last name, namely John (5, IN), Sarah J. 4, IN), William A (3, IN), and James H (1, IN). It is possible that these are children of Matilda from a previous marriage. If so, the two Vanlaningham daughters probably had a different mother.2

William was listed as the head of household in the May 1860 Census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Indiana. He was 50, born in Kentucky, and listed as a farmer with $200 property. Included in the household were his wife, Matilda; 3 daughters, Nancy, Sarah J, and Emma A; and 6 sons, John L, William A, James H., Nelson J., Thomas J, and Franklin. His name is given as Wilburn in the census.Sarah, William, and James who had the last name of Layfayette in the 1850 Census are named Vanlandingham in this census indicating that they may have been adopted by William Vanlandingham.5

William died after 1860.6

A WM M Vanlandingham appears in the Censuses of 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910. He was born in 1824 in Kentucky and died in 1913 in Davis County, Iowa. However his wife is consistently identified as Harriet in the censuses and none of the children listed match those of William and Matilda Vanlandingham. It seems almost certain that this William M Vanlandingham is a different person.

Vicky Burrell's Dole Family Tree (13386964) shows Nancy's parents as William (1824-1913?) and Matilda Vanlandingham with several earliergenerations and lots of siblings. But dates and places seem dubious. Need to research further.
