Enoch Morris

M, b. circa 1770, d. 12 December 1844
Enoch Morris was born circa 1770 possibly in Hampshire County, West Virginia.1 He was the son of Jacob Morris and Sarah Enochs, daughter of David Enochs. Jacob was born about 1740 and died about 1807 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Morris of Hampshire County, Virginia.

Enoch, most of his brothers, and several allied families disappear from Washington County records in the late 1790's. His father, Jacob, is on the 1800 Census and county records until 1806. He probably died that year. No record of a will or probate has been found.1

Enoch married Susannah Wilson on 10 June 1788 in Frederick County, Virginia.2

In 1792 and 1793, Enoch was shown on the Tax List at Amwell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, with 1 cow and 1 horse. He was also shown in the 1794 Tax List with no tax shown and without the cow and horse..3

In August and September, 1792, Enoch served in Capt. Dickson's Company, Washington County Militia.1

An Enoch Morris is listed in an 1807 Census of Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio as a single white male over 21. A Jacob Morris is listed in the same census. But it seems very unlikely that this was our Enoch Morris in view of his apparent marriage somewhat before 1790 when his first child was born. There is little doubt about the fact of this marriage since all of the resulting children are listed in Enoch's will in 1839. An Enoch Morris is also listed in the 1810 Census of Washington County, Ohio (in the SE corner of the state next to West Virginia) but is probably a different person since our Enoch was married in Butler County in 1815.4

In 1810, Enoch was shown on the Tax List for Washington County, Ohio.5

Enoch served in the War of 1812 from Sept 14 to Oct 14, 1812 in Capt. Jacob Bell's 1st Ohio Mounted Militia..1 He also served from Sept 20 to Nov 19, 1814 in Capt. Zachariah De Witt's Ohio Mounted Infantry.1

Enoch married Phebe Breese on 3 August 1815 in Butler County, Ohio. Enoch and Phebe were married by John Vennedge, JP..6,7

Enoch and Phebe moved to Sullivan County (subsequently split into Greene County), Indiana about 1819, taking her two daughters with them.8,9

Enoch was listed as the head of household in the 45+ age group in the 1820 Census at Sullivan County, Indiana. Included in the family were 1 female 26-45 (presumably his wife Phebe); 2 males 16-26; 1 male 16-18, 2 females 10-16; 3 males under 10; and 3 females under 10..10

Enoch was listed as the head of household in the 50-60 age group in the 1830 Census at Greene County, Indiana. Included in the family were 1 female 40-50 (presumably his wife Phebe); 1 male and 1 female 15-20; 1 male and 2 females 10-15; 2 females 5-10; and 3 females under 5..11

On 6 June 1832, Enoch Morris purchased 80 acres of land in T6-N, R7-W, Sec 17, 2ndPM from the Federal Government.12

Enoch made a will in May 1839 in Greene County, Indiana. The will was recorded on 12 December 1844. Enoch's will lists his wife, Phebe Morris, and heirs: Hiram Morris, youngest son; Isiah Morris, son; Rhody Whitconack; Mariah Whitconack; Isack Morris; Rachel Morris; Charlotty Morris; Elender Morris; Mahaly Morris; Lucina Morris; and Hiram Morris, children by last wife (these were children of Enoch and Phebe). Also listed were Sary Hartley, William Morris, Abigal Archer, Robert Morris, Byer Showalter, Jacob Morris, and Pheby Smith - these children to get nothing as the testator had no property during first marriage. The executor was Isack Morris.13

Enoch was listed as the head of household in the 60-70 age group in the 1840 Census at Greene County, Indiana. Included in the family were 1 female 60-70 (presumably his wife Phebe); 1 male 20-30; 3 females 15-20; 2 females 10-15; and 1 male 5-10..14

Enoch died on 12 December 1844 at Summit, Greene County, Indiana.15,16 His body was interred in December 1844 at Morris Cemetery, Summit. The gravestone (placed by the Peabody Coal Company) is inscribed "Pioneer Soldier of War of 1812"..17,16

Benjamin Hewey was born circa 1775 at Iredell County, North Carolina.1 Benjamin Hewey was also known as Benjamin Huey.

Benjamin married Nancy [--?--] Hewey circa 1798.2 Benjamin Huey was one of the first settlers near the mouth of the Eel River in Jefferson Township, Greene Co., IN in 1818.
