Unknown Pugh

M, b. 1838?, d. before 1866
Unknown Pugh was born in 1838?.1

It would appear that an unknown Pugh married Mary Jane Slate or Ceresey sometime around 1860 and had at least two children; Lydia, born about 1861 in Missouri, and Alonzo Morton, born about 1865 in Indiana. Both of these children were identified as Stanley's in the 1870 Census after Mary's marriage to William Stanley.2

Mary Jane Pugh

F, b. 6 January 1840, d. 13 April 1884
Mary Jane Pugh was born on 6 January 1840. If the 1865 New York Census is correct, her parents were Jonathan and Malinda Hunt and she was born in Orleans County, New York.1,2 Mary Jane Pugh was also known as Mary Jane Hunt.3 Mary Jane's maiden name is uncertain. In a Declaration for a Widow's Army Pension in August 1875, Mary Jane said that her name before her marriage to William Stanley was Mary J. Ceresey. However, this surname was very difficult to read.4 Her name was given as Mary J. Slate, a native of Paducah, Kentucky in a newspaper article on the death of her son, William Deming Stanley.5

It would appear that Mary Jane married an unknown Pugh sometime around 1860 and had at least two children; Lydia, born about 1861 in Missouri, and Alonzo Morton, born about 1865 in Indiana. Both of these children were identified as Stanley's in the 1870 Census after Mary's marriage to William Stanley.6

Some accounts indicate that Mary Jane may have had another son, Charlie, once described as the "half-brother" of her son, William Deming Stanley" or the "full brother" of John William Stanley, her son-in-law. But this would appear to make Charlie the son of William Stanley and his first wife, Nancy Vanlandingham.7

Mary married William Stanley on 21 October 1866 in Greene County, Indiana. William and Mary Jane were married by W. C. Andrews, JP..8,9

Mary Jane appeared in the census of 1870 in the household of her husband William Stanley in Greene County. She was 28, born in Kentucky.10

Mary Jane conveyed and quit claimed to Noah Elgin for $555 30 acres in the NE 1/4 of Section 9 in Smith Township, Greene County, IN on 3 April 1875.11 On 16 Apr 1875, Noah and Lucinda Elgan conveyed and quit claimed to Mary J. Stanley for $300 12 acres of the whole length of the North part of NE 1/4 Section 9 in Smith Township.12

Mary's husband, William Stanley, died in 1874. Greene County records show that a marriage license was issued for Mary J. Stanley and Henry H. Martin on 23 August 1878 However, it seems doubtful that this marriage ever took place because Mary signed her application for a Civil War pension in 1883 as Mary J. Stanley.13

A Butler Missouri article on the death of William D. Stanley indicates that his mother, Mary Jane, came to Missouri with three sons and two daughters and settled at Butler. It would appear that these children were - sons: William Deming Stanley (1867), Joseph E. Stanley (1871), and Elanso Pugh Stanley(?)( 1865); and daughters: Lydia Pugh Stanley(?) (1861), and Dorah Stanley (1869).5

Mary died on 13 April 1884 in Butler, Bates County, Missouri, at age 44.14,2 She was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Butler.2,15

Rachel married James Drake on 12 May 1867 in Greene County, Indiana.3

Rachel apparently received about 1883 a disability pension that James Drake had applied for. She also applied for a pension as a widow in 1877 and appealed for it several times until it was finally denied in 1898. A record in the pension file in 1892 indicated that she had personal property worth $110 and only 34 acres of poor land, worth about $200 with a mortgage on it which had been forclosed with principal and interest of $140.6

Rachel died on 9 January 1902 in Indiana at age 69.7
