Asa Slayton 1848
Asa Slayton was born on 27 March 1766 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1,2 Asa's name was borrowed from the Walker family.

Asa moved from the family homesite in Brookfield, Massachusetts to Chester, Massachusetts where he married, and then to Potsdam, New York where he died.3

Asa married Susannah Anderson on 14 April 1791 in Chester, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, (now Hampden Co.). The town records of Murrayfield (re-named Chester in 1783), cited in Copeland's History of Murrayfield, p.153, list an intention to marry between Asa Slayton and "widow Sarah Anderson" dated 13 March 1791. However, this appears to be a mixup at some point between Sarah Anderson, widow of Archelaus Anderson, and her daughter Susannah. Sarah Anderson, the widow, actually died in 1790 and is buried with Archelaus in Eastman Cemetery, Chester..4,5 An infant daughter of Asa and Susannah was stillborn on 14 January 1792 and is buried in the Eastman Cemetery on Bromley Road in Chester, Massachusetts.6

Asa was listed as the head of household in the 26-45 age group in the 1800 Census at Chester, Hampshire County (now Hampden County), Massachusetts. Included in the household was one female 26-45, presumably his wife Susannah; 1 male 16-26, possiblt his brother Josiah; 2 males under 10, probably Charles & Asa Jr; and 2 females under 10, probably Hannah and Electa..7

Although Asa is listed as the head of family in the 1810 census in Chester, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, he himself is not included. Possibly he was on a sales trip in Canada at the time of the census. Included in the household were 1 female in the 26-45 age group, presumably his wife Susannah; 1 male and 1 female 10-16, presumably his son Asa Jr. or Charles and his daughter Electa; and 2 males and 2 femailes under 10, presumably his sons Thomas and Darius and his daughters Susannah and Sally..8

Asa was a Lieut. of militia in 1792, and a Capt. in 1804. He carried on aJarge tannery and a big shoe shop. He was considered wealthy. He made up a large stock of boots and shoes, and he with his son Charles took them in wagons to Canada to sell. This must have been in 1812, for while there, war was declared and the British authorities confiscated his entire stock, and he returned to Chester a poor man. Poor, because he had borrowed some to complete his outfit, and now he had to sell out to pay up.3

While in Canada, a Mr. Lane had told Asa of the fine, cheap lands in St. Lawrence Co., N. Y. He had been in the army part of the time during the war, and after it ended, he decided to start life anew in another state. Loading his household utensils and tools on an ox-cart, and his family into a wagon drawn by two horses, in due time they reached Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., and July 18, 1815, he bought 100 acres on Plum Brook in the northwest part of the town, of E. Hulbert and wife, for $675. A log dwelling house was soon built and then laud cleared for wheat. Which year it was, I cannot say, probably 1816, but when his first crop was harvested, there was no barn to receive it. So he invited his neighbors for miles around to a "bee", and next morning about 100 were on hand bright and early. Trees were cut down, some scored and hewed, and soon some began framing; others were riving aud shaving shingles or shakes; and before the sun had set, the barn was up, roofed over and shingled, boarded around, and two large loads of wheat stowed away in the bay. The boards had been sawed at the mill which he had built earlier. The barn was 30 by 40 feet and about 20 years ago it was taken down and erected in Potsdam village, where it now stands clothed in a modern dress.
He started an ashery and engaged in the manufacture of potash; and it is said he could take a barrel of potash by the chimes and lift it from the ground over the box into the wagon. It is also said that he had double teeth all around, and that he could bend a ten-penny nail between his teeth. He built a large tannery and manufactured leather. He was an energetic, enterprising, useful citizen.3

Asa was listed as the head of household in the over 45 age group in the 1820 Census at St. Lawrence County, New York. Included in the household were 1 female 16-26, probably his daughter Susannah; 2 males 16-26, probably Asa Jr. and Thomas; 1 female 10-16; 1 male and 1 female 10-16, probably Darius and Sally; and 1 male under 10, unidentified. His wife Susannah is not listed in the census. Asa, Asa Jr., and Thomas are all farming in the census..9

Asa was listed as the head of household in the 60-70 age group in the 1830 Census at Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. Included in the household were a female 60-70, presumably his wife Susannah; 1 male 20-30, presumably his son Darius; a female 20-30, presumably his daughter Sally; and a male 10-15, unidentified.10

Asa was listed as the head of household in the 70-80 age group in the 1840 Census at Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. Included in the household were a female 70-80, presumably his wife Susannah; 1 male 30-40, presumably his son Darius; and 1 female 20-30, presumably his daughter Sally..11

Asa was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. He was 84, born in Massachusetts, and listed as a farmer with $1000 property. Included in the household was his daughter Sally (40, Mass). In the Non-Population Schedule for 1850, Asa was listed with 30 acres, 11 unimprovedm with a cash value of $1,000. He had 1 horse, 2 milk cows, 8 sheep, and 1 pig with a total value of $90.12

Asa died on 20 September 1852 in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York, at age 86.13,2 He was buried in September 1852 at West Potsdam Cemetery at West Potsdam, St Lawrence County, New York.14,2

Susannah married Asa Slayton on 14 April 1791 in Chester, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, (now Hampden Co.). Sarah Anderson, the widow, actually died in 1790 and is buried with Archelaus in Eastman Cemetery, Chester..4,5
