Phinehas Slayton
M, b. 4 September 1737, d. 13 September 1825
Father | Thomas Slayton b. 15 Jun 1709, d. Sep 1778 |
Mother | Abiel Harrington b. 21 Mar 1712/13, d. a 1786 |
Phinehas joined Capt. Andrew Dalrymple's Company in the French & Indian War and was out on the Crown Point expedition from 9 August to 27 December 1755. In 1757 he joined Capt. Jabez Upham's Company with his brother Thomas and started out on 9 August for the relief of Fort William Henry but returned on 26 August when it was learned that the fort had surrendered.
Phinehas bought 10 acres "in ye township of Brookfield for 13 pounds, 6 shillings, 8 pence" on 14 December 1758. He bought more land in Brookfield for 17 pounds "in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George ye Second" on 16 May 1760.
At the beginning of the Revolution, "Penehas Slayton marched in Capt. John Wolcott's Company of Rangers from Brookfield April 19, 1775 in consequence of an alarm that day; gone 12 days." He then enlisted in Capt. John Cowl's Company, Col. B. R. Woodbridge's Regiment, and went into camp at Roxbury 19 May 1775. The battle of Bunker Hill was fought by these 8-month men but there is no record of which regiments participated. In 1777, Phinehas was a Corporal in Capt. John Bannister's Company and April 22nd he was ordered to "warn the men in the Name of the free states of America to appear equipped on the parade at the South Meeting House on Thursday next at one o'clock." On 30 June 1778, the Committee of the 3rd Precinct of Brookfield reported 193 men liable for military duty with only 26 having no credit already. Phinehas was credited for 11 2/3 months.
In an application for a pension, made in a trembling hand when he was quite old but undated, Phinehas stated "I Phinehas Slayton was Born in Massachusetts in town Brookfield and was in the French war in year 1755 and the year 1757 and was in the Battle att ticontroge about 9 July under the Command Gin. AbbtCrome, and in Maj. Rogar's Battle near wood Crick about the 9 August. I suferd much hard Ship and the Loss of my Back and Blanket wish I never got no pay wich was Laid down By order. I was in the British war the fust yer and was Cald upon By Gin. Millen for my Carpender tols and when my time was out tha Said I must leve my tols and Shold Bee paid For them. Their was 3 hundred wait of tols. I never got any pay For them till papar money had Run most out."
The genealogy of Hiram K. Slayton states that Phinehas "was a brave soldier and officer in the Revolutionary Army and one of the leading citizens and a magistrate of his town. He was called by his descendants and neighbors 'Long Stockings' because he wore short velvet breeches with long stockings and silver knee-buckles."
About 1787, Phinehas located a soldier's claim or "concession" "granted at Royalton September 16, 1786" in the town of Calais, VT. Two of his sons went there to live about 1790; another went a few years later.
The last time his wife Eleanor joined with him in giving a deed was 8 April 1801. She must have died soon after that for on 13 December 1806 Phinehas alone sold 110 acres for $1200 and on 23 December 1806 he gave another deed for "about 110 acres the whole of my farm in Brookfield corner binding on land owned by Thomas Slayton." On 2 December Phinehas bought "about 1 acre for $30," possibly for a house. In the next authenticated land record, Phinehas and his wife Roxana of Calais, VT sold between 9 and 10 acres in Brookfield on 23 October 1809 for $100.
On 17 March 1808, Phinas Slayton paid tax of 12 cents on 11 acres on Lot No. 36 in the second division of lots in Calais, VT. On 11 May 1808, Phineas Slayton of Calais, VT bought 50 more acres. Since he sold out in Brookfield in December 1806 and was living in Calais in March 1808, he and his son Elisha probably moved to Vermont in 1807. By that time, all but two of his children had gone to Montpelier and Calais, Vermont. After Phinehas joined them, the other two boys did also, a few years later. After the war of 1812, Phinehas spent one winter with his daughter Hannah in Brookfield. About 1817, one of his boys and two of the girls went from Vermont to Cayuga County, New York.
Phinehas spent his last days in Montpelier near the Calais line and died there at age 88 years and 9 days. His son Elisha died the same day, both of cholera. After a double funeral, they were both buried in the cemetery in Calais on the south part of the farm first settled by Simeon in 1790. Phinehas Slayton was born on 4 September 1737 at Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 Phinehas was baptized on on 11 September 1737 at Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.2 He married Eleanor Morey on on 14 May 1761 at Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Brookfield Vital Records, p.409, also list the marriage of Phinehas Slayton and Esperance Gleeson of Spencer on 9 March 1786 but this must be a different person since Asa Slayton (p.38) reports that his wife Eleanor joined with him in a deed on 8 April 1801.
.3 Phineas and Eleanor had at least 10 children, including:
- Phineas, born 12 December 1761, baptised 26 July 1767 Spencer, died 23 October 1811;
- Jesse, born 1764, baptised 26 July 1767 Spencer, died 24 June 1846;

- Lucy, baptised 26 July 1767 Spencer;
- Abigail, born 1768 Brookfield. Married Bemos Hamilton 11 March 1792 Brookfield;
- Simeon, born 1769, baptised 23 April 1769 Spencer, died 24 November 1847;
- Elisha, born 1774, died 13 September 1825;
- Elijah, born 22 September 1777, died 23 September 1849;
- Hannah, born 9 September 1783, died 10 April 1857.4 Phinehas and others signed a petition on 20 February 1764 to separate their land from Brookfield and attach it to Spencer. The petition was not granted but several years later a road was laid out to provide better access to the Slayton/Harrington farms on the condition that Thomas Slayton and his sons-in-law Henry Spring and Nathan Whitney build and maintain the necessary bridges. As late as 1870, there were still many Slayton's and Harrington's living in this area between Seven Mile River and Teneriffe Hill..5
Phinehas was listed as the head of household in the 1790 Census at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Included in the household were 1 male 16 and up, presumably Phinehas; 1 other male 16 and up, 2 males under 16, and 4 females, presumably including his wife Eleanor..6

David Slayton was born on 2 June 1740 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1 The History of New Braintree says that David served in Capt. Sylvanus Walker's Company from 15 May to 27 December 1757, probably in the expedition that captured Triconderoga and Crown Point.
Worchester County land records indicate that David Slayton of Brookfield, yeoman, bought 50 acres in Charlton on 3 October 1761. On 1 February 1762 he sold the same land. These are the only land transactions by him recorded in Worchester County. His children were reported to be born in Brookfield up to 1776.
The History of Woodstock, Vermont by H. S. Dana says " David Slayton living in New Rutland, Mass. bought land on Slayton Hill Sept. 1773, and settled there a little earlier than Samuel did (in 1779). At the Annual Meeting in March 1779, David Slayton was elected a Hog Howard. He brought up a large family." David moved his family to Vermont about 1778 and settled on Slayton Hill in what is now South Woodstock (although one deed dated 4 December 1780 says David Slayton of Brookfield, Mass.)
David must have died about 1794 for in 1796 his family was buying land in Whitestown, Oneida County, New York
David was the first Slayton to leave Massachusetts. In September 1773 he he bought land on what has since been called Slayton Hill in South Woodstock, VT. Though he was there at times after 1777, his family did not move there until 1780. After his death in 1795, his nine children went with their mother to Whitestown, Oneida Couny, New York. (21.)
David married Martha Thayer on 2 October 1760 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2 David and Martha had at least 10 children, including:
- Amasa, born Spencer 13 April 1761, died March 1833;
- Patte, born Spencer 20 Dec 1762;
- David, born 1764, died April 1838;

Included in the household were 1 male over 16 and 2 females..6
David died circa 1794 in Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont.7

Her death is ascribed to throat distemper in the Weston VR and to scarlet fever in the Watertown VR.

- [S199] Personal inspection of gravestones in the Evergreen Cemetery, East Brookfield, MA on 31 Jul 1999 by WEStanley Jr., Asa Slayton assumed that Abiel died in Watertown, MA because the notice of her death appeared in the history of Watertown. Her death is also recorded in Weston Church records (per Weston VR, p.425). However, the birth of her brother David on June 2, 1740 is recorded in Brookfield VR (p.199) and she is actually buried in the East Brookfield Cemetery. Thus, it seems probable that she died in Brookfield and that her death was recorded in the Watertown/Weston records because her parents were still members of the Weston church until 1755.

She is not included in Thomas Slayton's will which lists all the other living children, is not listed in Asa Slayton's book, and has not been found in any other record. She is included herein because the baptism record explicitly identifies her as a daughter of Thomas and Abiel Slaten and there is a gap from 1751 to 1757 in the birthdates of the other children.
