It is not clear exactly when Thomas and Abiel left Weston. Their last known sale of land in Weston was on 16 April 1739. However, Weston Church Records show that Thomas Slaton and Abiel his wife were "remov'd" in the church on 3 Dec 1738. Apparently this meant that they were received in the church because the same record shows that they were dismissed from the Weston church on 27 July 1755 and recommended to the 2nd Church in Brookfield.

Hampden County records show that Thomas made 12 land purchases in the county from 1737 to 1745. In April 1739 Thomas and Abiel were among the first settlers in Tyringham, Berkshire County, in Western Massachusetts. They apparently stayed there only briefly. Asa Slayton indicates that their second child, Abiel, died in Weston on June 26, 1740. Her death is recorded in the Weston Church records. However, Thomas and Abiel's third son, David, was born in Brookfield on June 2, 1740 and the daughter Abiel is buried in the East Brookfield Cemetery (her grave is identified as the first burial in the cemetery). Thus it seems likely that Asa was incorrect and the daughter Abiel actually died in Brookfield. Her death was probably reported in the Weston Church records because Thomas and his wife Abiel were members of the church until 1755. On this basis, it appears that Thomas and Abiel left Weston in 1739, settled briefly in Tyringham, and were living in Brookfield by June 1740.

In 1771, Thomas bought 175 1/2 acres in Rutland District for 116 pounds. In 1777 a deed says "Thomas Slayton of Barre, lately called New Rutland" sold this land for 300 pounds. Some records say Joshua was born in Berry (Barre) in 1748 but Barre was not organized until 1774. The records of this district are preserved back to 1756 and no Slayton is there.
Thomas Slayton was born on 15 June 1709 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Some time before 1732, Thomas moved to Weston, Massachusetts (presumably with his family) where he was living at the time of his marriage. Weston had been established in 1712 from a part of Watertown, the home of his future wife.1 Thomas married Abiel Harrington on on 21 September 1732 at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Weston Vital Records read: " Thomas Slatin of Weston and Abigal Harrington of Watertown were married in Watertown September 21, 1732 by Reverend Wareham Williams. Per the Slayton Obelisk in East Brookfield Cemetery, the marriage took place in Abiel's home..2 Thomas was a member of at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in December 1738. Thomas was admitted to full communion with his wife Abiel (church not specified)..3 He made a will on on 4 February 1772 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.. The will divides his estate into 9 equal parts. One part is reserved for pious uses by 3 local ministers; the remainder is for his children or their successors after deducting specified sums already received. The children are named as Thomas, Phinehas, David, Joshua, Ruth, Reuben, Samuel, and Patience. Thomas's wife Abiel is given the use of 1/3 of the children's share during her remaining life. His fifth son Reuben is named as the Sole Executor of the estate. The will was filed on 22 September, 1778. A complete copy of the will is given in Asa Slayton's book..4 He died in in September 1778 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, at age 69.5 He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery at East Brookfield, Hampton County, Massachusetts.6

His birth and death are recorded on the Slayton Obelisk at the high point of the cemetery. Although the obelisk was not erected until 1900, excavation for its foundation reportedly gave positive proof that it is on the exact spot where Thomas and his wife Abiel were buried. No individual graves for either Thomas or Abiel were observed when the cemetery was visited in 7/99.

Phineas Slayton

FatherThomas Slayton b. 20 Sep 1682, d. a 1712
MotherHannah Culwood b. c 1689?, d. a 1712
Phineas's birth date and place was obtained from an unidentified family history obtained at the East Brookfield, MA Historical Museum. No source was given. Asa Slayton says that the only information found about Phineas is from the Joshua record based on a Slayton family Bible and from traditions but no birth or death dates are given. Asa thought Phineas may have moved to Goochland Co., VA before the Revolution to establish all of the Slaton lines in the South. However, there is no evidence of this move and it is strongly rejected by the descendants of the southern branch of the Slayton family. Phineas was born circa 1711? At Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1

Infomation on Hannah is very uncertain. Birth and death dates obtained from unidentified family summary obtained at East Brookfield Historical Museum. Asa Slayton says that the only information found about Hannah is from the Joshua record based on a Slayton family Bible and from traditions. He says the (Joshua?) records say she died at age 88 which is consistent with the unidentied source. According to Asa, no record of her has been found in all the towns and counties where she may have lived. She is not mentioned by name in either the 1790 or 1800 Census. Of course, she may well have married or was living in another Slayton household at the time. Hannah Slayton was born circa 1713? In Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1
