Abel Merrill was born on 20 February 1643 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1,2
Abel took the Oath of Fidelity in 1668 and the Oath of Allegiance in 1678. Under the name of "Abil Merell" he was a soldier in the company of Capt. Thomas Noyes in 1668. Per Newbury Extract, Abel was a founding member of a Baptist Church in Newbury in 1682.3 Abel married Priscilla Chase on 10 February 1670/71 at Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Same date of marriage from Davis, Mass & Maine Families, p.594. Same date in Aquila Chase & His Descendants. Place from LDS Family Group Record which has date of 10 Feb 1670. LDS Record shows that Thomas Merrill, Abel's brother, also married Priscilla Chase on 10 Feb 1670, the same day that Abel did. Obviously one of these marriages is wrong..4
Apparently Abel lived in a close relationship with his mother and his stepfather Stephen Jordan. The inventory of the estate of his step-father Stephen Jordan, includes a debt to Abel for farm work "besids attendance upon him both night & day for theis last 3 years which if it be made up ten pounds he would be a looser" Abel was also the administrator of the estate of his mother Susanna (Wolterton) Jordan.5
The tax list of 1688 shows that Abel was in that year assessed on one house, five acres of "Plow Lands" in Newbury, one horse, five cows, six young cattle, ten sheep and four swine.6
Abel died on 28 October 1689 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 46. Abel died intestate. Edward Woodman and Benjamin Morss presented an inventory of his estate totalling 347 pounds on 22 November 1689. At his death, Abel was the owner of land in Haverhill, his interest being appraised at 35 pounds. This was no doubt his undivided share in land which he and his brother Daniel purchased in 1673 and 1674. An inventory of his estate is given in A Merrill Memorial.
Abel's widow Priscilla Merrill served as administratrix of the estate and filed her account on 1 November 1697. The estate was divided with 1/3 set aside for his widow during her life and the rest divided equally among his children except that his son Abel received a double share..7,2

About the time he became of age to receive the five pounds left to him in his father's will, John left Newbury and went to Hartford, Connecticut where he is spoken of in 1657 as having the second lot west of Main St. on the south side of Elm. In Hartford, John became associated with his uncle, George Wolterton, another of the first settlers of Hartford, a man of means and proprietor of a large tanyard. Some sources believe that Wolterton, having no childen of his own, adopted John but no real authority for this has been found. At any rate, John did not give up the Merrill name, but he did inherit a considerable estate from his uncle, including the tanyard and a house. He continued the tanyard successfully throughout his life, thinking so much of it in fact as to will that "it shall not Bee Allienated to any Person that is not of my prosteritie for ever.".4 He was made freeman in Hartford in on 20 May 1658.
