Rev John Prince

M, b. 1580, d. September 1644
Rev John Prince was born in 1580 in Sunningwell, Berkshire, England.1 Rev. John Prince matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford about 1597 and received his B.A. degree 6 July 1601. It is not known where he was employed following his graduation but in 1611-13 two of his children were baptized at St. Martin's in Oxford. In 1614 he was Curate at West Shefford, Berkshire.

On 5 January 1619/20 Rev. John Prince was presented to the Rectory of East Shefford, upon the death of Rev. Peter Yate, and his commission was issued with the signature of Martin (Fotherby) Bishop of Salisbury on the tenth. Thomas Tesdale of Abington was his surety for the First Fruits. This is considered significant, as kinsmen were frequently bondsmen in such cases, and the Tesdales were connected with the Princes of Oxfordshire and Berkshire by marriage. It is probable that his father-in-law lived, at this time, in East Shefford, as two of his daughters were married there by Rev. John Prince, in 1622 and 1626. Later Walter Toldervey lived in Inckpen, a parish six miles distant in the same county.

Rev. John Prince continued at Little Shefford as Rector until his death. No record of a will or settlement has been found. His successor, Rev. Thomas Saunders, was presented on 16 January 1644/45.

Rev. Thomas Prince (1687-1758), the New England Chronologists, stated that Rev. John had four sons and seven daughters, all growing to adult years. The list of his children lacks the name of one daughter. His pedigree, printed in the New England Gen. Reg Vol. 5:375, compiled from papers left by Rev. Thomas Prince - who spent some time in England and visited relatives there - shows Francis, merchant of London, as a brother of Elder John Prince of Hull, MA. There are several records of Anthony Prince.

Rev. John Prince was a rigid churchman all his life. He was a strong conformist and clung to the tenets of his ancestors with unyielding firmness.

John married Elizabeth Toldervey on 26 September 1606 in West Shefford, Berkshire, England. Rev John and Elizabeth had 7 daughters and 4 sons..2,3
