John Cutting
M, b. 1593, d. 20 November 1659
John Cutting was born in 1593 in Ipswich, Ipswich Borough, Suffolk, England.1
John was a master mariner sailing out of Ipswich, England. He sailed the ship Francis to New England in 1634 carrying several relatives. He was also said to be the Master of the New Supply in 1637, the Advent in 1647 and the John's Adventure in 1655. In total he may have made as many as 14 Atlantic crossings as ships captain.
Although John continued to follow the sea, he brought his wife and family to New England and obtained land in Watertown in 1636-1637. They moved to Newbury before 1641, possibly in 1639. In 1642 he was a freeholder in Newbury and was one of the commissioners appointed to arrange moving the town from the Parker to the Merrimac River. In 1648 he bought a house and land in Charlestown and was a resident there in 1651 although he continued to hold considerable land in Newbury.
By 1656 or earlier the family had returned to Newbury while John contiued to sail between England and New England. He made his will 22 Oct 1659 and it was proved 27 March 1660. The total valuation was 737 pounds, a large estate for the time. He left money and property to a large number children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
John and Mary had the following children:
- John Cutting Jr. Little is known about John Jr. Per LDS Family Group Record, he was born about 1620 in England and died in 1659, probably in Newbury, Mass. He was joint master of a ship with his father in 1641.
- Judith Cutting (possibly). Per LDS Family Group Record, Judith was born about 1618 in England. She married James Browne of Charlestown, Mass. in 1637 and died in 1650 in Newbury, Mass. Davis in Mass and Maine Families, p.362, strongly doubts that Judith was actually John Cutting's daughter, citing Browne's subsequent marriage to Sarah Cutting (unlikely if Judith was her sister) and the lack of mention in John Cutting's will.
-Mary Cutting was born about 1622 in England. She married Nicholas Noyes in 1640 and died in 1701 in Newbury, Mass.
-Sarah Cutting was born in 1629 in England. She married John Browne of Charlestown, Mass. about 1651. After his death in 1676, she married William Healy of Watertown in 1677 in Newbury. After Healy's death in 1683, she married Hugh March of Newbury in 1685. Sarah died in Newbury, Mass. in 1699.
-John Cutting was born about 1629 in Watertown, Mass. (per LDS Family Group record). John is not listed as a child of John Cutting in Davis, Mass. and Maine Families.2,1
John married Mary Ward circa 1615 in in England.
John died on 20 November 1659 in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.3,1 He was buried in the Burying Ground of the First Settlers at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1

Mary Ward
F, b. circa 1592, d. 6 March 1663/64
.
Mary was apparently well able to handle her husband's affairs while he was away at sea. After John Cutting died in 1659, Mary married John Miller sometime before May, 1662, apparently in Newbury. John was apparently Rev. John Miller whose wife Lydia died in Boston 7 Aug 1658. Miller received a A.B. at Cambridge in 1627. Coming to New England, he was at Dorchester in 1636, at Roxbury, at Rowley in 1639 and later at Yarmouth on Cape Cod and at Roxbury again. He seems to have preached where any temporary need existed but was not securely settled anywhere. He was in Groton when he died on 12 June 1663, his son being named his administrator the following July. Mary Ward was born circa 1592 in Cholderton, Wiltshire, England.
