Capt. William Knowlton
M, b. 1584, d. circa 1639
Capt. William Knowlton was born in 1584 at England.1 Traditionally the name Knowlton reached back to the time of William the Conqueror, 1066-87. William Knowlton, commonly called Captain William, was the last of four children of Richard and Elizabeth Knowlton. Richard Knowlton was born in 1553, probably at Knowlton Manor about six miles from the great cathedral at Canterbury, Kent County, England. Richard married Elizabeth Cantize on 17 July 1577.2 William married Ann Elizabeth Smith ??? 1608 at in England .3 He died circa 1639 at Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Captain William and his family sailed for America in 1632. Stocking's Knowlton History indicated Capt. William died during this voyage and may have been buried in Nova Scotia where an ancient gravestone bearing the name of William Knowlton was discovered by a land surveyor in 1839. However, subsequent research by George Knowlton makes it more probable that William reached Hingham and died there about 1639..4
