- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. The marriage history of Benjamin Sylvester is unclear and, unfortunately, no marriage records have been found. In 1840, Benjamin was living with 2 women in the 20-30 age group. One was probably his wife; the other is not known. In 1850, Benjamin was living with a 39 year old woman named Ann A.
Probate papers for Israel Noyes estate include among his heirs "Isaiah Sylvester and (blank first name) his wife". No other record for Isaiah has been found and it would appear that the 2 women living with Benjamin in 1840 were too young to have been married in 1826 when Israel died.
Cotton's Keepsakes by Alfred J. Cotton (p. 463) identifies Israel Noyes' daughter Sarah as Mrs. Benjamin Sylvester. Per Dearborn Co. Obituaries, Aurelia Buell, dau of Benjamin & Ann Sylvester, died in Manchester Twp 9 Jan 1844, age one year & 8 mon. Hence, Benjamin and Ann must have married sometime before mid-1841.
From this information, it seems likely that Benjamin married Sarah Noyes sometime before 1831 (when Benjamin's oldest child, Amos, was born). Since there is a long gap (8 years) before the birth of the next child, Benjamin Jr., in 1839 and the remaining children are fairly close together, it seems likely that Sarah died some time before 1838 and Benjamin had married Ann by that time. On this basis, Ann was probably one of the women in Benjamin's household in 1840 and she was the mother of his last 4 children.

Peter C Wilcox
M, b. circa 1813
Peter C Wilcox was born circa 1813 at New York.1
Peter married Eliza Noyes on 24 January 1836 in Dearborn County, Indiana. Eliza and Peter had at least 3 children:
- Elizabeth (1838-1850+).
- Talma N. (1842-1860+).
- Ida (1853-1860+).
A male child, born 1835-1840, is also listed in the 1840 Census. A grave in the Universalist Church Cemetery in Manchester, identified only as Daughter, who died 5 Nov 1836. This grave is next to the grave of Mary Wilcox, daughter of P. C. & A. M. Wilcox, so she may have also been a child of Peter's marriage to Eliza..2
Peter Wilcox appears in 3 successive US Censuses with 3 different wives. In 1850, his wife was Eliza Noyes, born 1816 in Maine. In 1860, his wife was Sarah, born 1828 in Indiana. In 1870, his wife was Annie M., born 1832 in Indiana. Unfortunately, no records have been found for his 2nd two marriages.
Based on the ages of his children in the various censuses and the gaps between them, it appears that Eliza was the mother of Elizabeth (1838), Talma (1842), and Ida (1853). Eliza died in 1855 and Peter must have married Sarah very soon thereafter. Sarah was the mother of Elmore (1857), and Alma/Jennie (1859). Sarah must have died between 1860 (in census) and 1865 (when Jerry was conceived). On this basis, Peter probably married Annie about 1864.3
Peter was listed as the head of family in the in the 20-30 age group age group in the 1840 Census in A. J. Cotton Division, Dearborn County, Indiana. (?) in 1865. Peter and Annie had at least one child, namely Jerry L., born in 1867 in Indiana.8
Peter was listed as the head of family in the 1870 Census in Noble Twp., Shelby Co., Indiana. He was He was 57, a farmer with $11,850 real property, born in New York. Ann (?)
F, b. circa 1811
Ann (?) was born circa 1811 at New York.
Ann married Benjamin Sylvester circa 1838. Although no marriage record has been found, it is likely that the marriage took place in Dearborn Co., Indiana where Benjamin lived in 1840 and 1850. Benjamin and Ann appear to have had at least 4 children, namely:
- Benjamin Jr., born 1839;
- Aurelia Buell, born 1841, died 1844;
- Aurelia B., born 1845; and
- Mary A., born 1846..1,2

Ann A. appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of her husband Benjamin Sylvester in Aurora, Indiana. She was 39, born in New York.4

- [S1133] U. S. - [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley.
On this basis, Peter probably married Annie about 1864. - [S1133] U. S. Census,1860, Manchester, Dearborn Co., Indiana, p. 340, Dwelling 326, Family 315.

Alden raised a company of volunteers in the Civil War and was mustered in as Captain, Co. K, 26th Indiana Volunteers. He served in that regiment from August 1861 to January 1866 and mustered out as a Major although brevitted as a Lt Colonel.7
In 1869 Alden and his wife Amanda moved from Ripley Co. Indiana to Osage Co., Kansas where he lived on a farm one mile north of Malvern.7
Alden was listed as the head of family in the 1870 Census in Valley Brook Twp., Osage Co., Kansas. He was 51, born in Maine, and listed as a farmer. In the household were his wife and six children. His daughter Abigail and her husband and his son Benjamin both lived on adjacent farms..8
On 18 November 1870, Alden submitted a claim for a Civil War pension. The claim states that on or about the 1st day of July 1863 while in front of Vicksburg, Mississippi, his eyes became inflamed from exposure and severe siege duty which resulted in chronic opthalmia. He reported that his present physical condition left him totally incapacitated for manual labor and that, one half of the time for the last two years, he could not stand the light in the daytime. He was awarded a pension for blindness on 29 July 1876.9

Alden died on 29 February 1888 at Melvern, Osage Co., Kansas, at age 69. An excerpt from a memoriam written by an unnamed comrade from Scranton,Kansas on March 5, 1888 reads "Major Jumper has obeyed the bugle call that is fast gathering the volunteers who wore the blue to the eternal campingground, and whose reveille will soon sound for the last comrade on this side of the river. And it is well. A sorrowing family he has left - an affectionate wife, children whose love for him can not be measured by words, and friends and neighbors who sadly realize their loss. But our grief is in part compensated. He could not see here - almost blind for years - but he sees there! Here he recognized friends by voice; there his eye kindles with the luster of youth as he greets the dear ones gone before, and strikes hands with the comrades who lay by his side in the trenches, kept step with him on the weary night march, and slept with him under the winter stars in the damp swamp or on the bleak hillside. MajorJumper was the deadly foe of shams. He believed in calling things by their proper names. This fact is shown by the title preceding his name. Many men with a colonel's commission would have enjoyed no less a title than General, but he desired to be known as we knew him and called him Major.... In this country he had a few if any equals in debate. Fearless and confident he stood before the people and the man who measured swords with him upon the platform of stage found a foe man worthy of his steel...".7 (an unknown value.)11 He was buried in Melvern Cemetery at Melvern, Kansas.12
