Charles may have appeared in the census of 1820 in the household of his father Israel Noyes at Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, if the census occured after his birth. He would have been in the under 10 age group.1 Charles was born circa July 1820 at Dearborn County, Indiana.2

Charles probably appeared on the census of 1830 in the household of his brother Hugh Noyes in Manchester, Indiana.3 He was probably also in his brother's household in the census of 1840 at A. J. Cotton District, Dearborn County, Indiana. He was in the 15-20 age group.4

Charles Noyes and Mary Elizabeth Jumper obtained a marriage license on 28 Sept 1840 and were married on 1 October 1840 at Dearborn County, Indiana, by Alfred J. Cotton, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church.5

Mary Elizabeth Jumper

F, b. 31 July 1820, d. between 1842 and 1844
FatherJoseph Jumper b. 22 Apr 1786, d. 28 Sep 1855
MotherPhoebe Milliken b. 1796, d. c 1854
Mary Elizabeth Jumper was born on 31 July 1820 in South Thomaston, Lincoln County, Maine, (now Knox Co., ME).1

Very little is known about Mary Elizabeth Jumper except for her marriage to Charles Noyes. It is almost certain that Elizabeth Phoebe Noyes who was living with Joseph Jumper in 1850 was her daughter and that Joseph was her father. Note that Elizabeth Phoebe's name is a combination of Mary's middle name and the name of Joseph's wife.2

Mary Elizabeth probably appeared in the census of 1820 in the household of her father Joseph Jumper in Thomaston, Maine. She was in the under 10 age group.3 Mary Elizabeth (or her sister Nancy) may also have appeared in the census of 1840 in the household of her father Joseph Jumper in Manchester, Indiana. Only one of the two girls in the 15-20 age group is listed.4

Mary Elizabeth Jumper and Charles Noyes obtained a marriage license on 28 Sept 1840 and were married on 1 October 1840 at Dearborn County, Indiana, by Alfred J. Cotton, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church.5

Mary Elizabeth died between 1842 and 1844. There is an undated epitaph in A.J.Cotton's book, Cotton's Keepsake, for Mrs. Charles Noyes and infant babe, implying that she may have died in childbirth. If so, she must have died between 1842 (1 year after birth of daughter Elizabeth Phoebe) and 1844 (when her husband Charles re-married).

The epitaph reads:

"ForMrs Charlse Noyes and infant babe.

Here lies a mother with her babe
Slumbering in her arms
Virtue was hers - pure virtue hers,
And many were her charms.

A husband dear those virtues prized, and her his idol made,
But she has left his kind abode for 'joys that never fade.'
Though short her 'passage to the tomb,' the struggle was severe-
Many the friends that mourn her loss - 'Witness' he flowing tear..6
