David Kenney
M, b. circa 1794, d. circa October 1837
Father | John Kinney b. c 1775 |
Little is definitely known about David Kenney. His census records, land purchases and estate papers are the only specific information found to date. His birth and marriage dates are estimated from a 1820 Census in Virginia. But there is no clear proof that this is the same David Kenney except that Alfred H Kenney, known to be David's son through his estate papers, was born in Virginia.
David is thought to have been born about 1794 in Virginia.1 He married Nancy [--?--] Kenney circa 1816 at Virginia.2
The family of David and Nancy Kenney shown herein is somewhat speculative. Estate papers for David show that he left a widow and 11 children at his death. Guardianship papers and land records definitely identify Alfred H., John D., David (Jr.), George Washington, James P., Mary Jane, Margaret Ann, Amanda, and Martha as his children. The 2 children not identified in these records may have been Albert and an unknown daughter born 1825-1830. The 1840 Census shows David's widow Nancy with 14 children. The extra 3 children may have been relatives or servants.
David Kenney was listed in the census of 1820 at Waynesboro, Augusta County, Virginia. He was in the 26-45 age group. Included in the household were 1 female 16-26, presumably his wife Nancy; 2 males and 1 female all under 10.3
David was listed as the head of household in the 40-50 age group in the 1830 Census at Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio. Included in the household was 1 female 30-40, presumably his wife Nancy; 1 male 10-15; 2 females and 1 male 5-10; and 1 male and 3 females under 5..4
David purchased land in W1/2 NE1/4 of Sec 35, Town 10N, Rge 4E West of Greater Miami Meridian, at Newberry Twp, Miami County, Ohio, from the Federal Goverment on 5 March 1832.5 About the same time he purchased the adjoining NE1/4 Sec35 T11N R4E from Jacob Counts.6
An unknown person was listed as the head of household in the Quadrennial Census of 1835 at Shelby County at Cynthian Twp. in 1835.7
David died circa October 1837 in Shelby County, Ohio. An inventory of his estate dated 18 October 1838 seems to indicate that his death had been a year earlier..8

- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. Date of birth estimated from 1820 Census. Assuming that this census record is the correct David Kenney, he was born between 1775 and 1794. Since his first known child was born in 1819, assume that David was born near the end of this time period.
- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. Date and place of marriage based on the 1820 Census, Augusta Co., Virginia, which indicates that David & Nancy had 3 children under the age of 10 so that the marriage was most likely at least 4 years before then.

- [S1141] Personal Conclusion by Bill Stanley. Per 1840 Census, Nancy was born between 1800 and 1810. Since she was apparently married about 1816, she must have been born at the very beginning of this period. Birthplace is uncertain; 1880 Census for son George says VA; 1900 Census for probable son Alfred says PA.
