Mary Jane Kenney was born on 29 January 1834 at Ohio.1,2 She is established as a daughter of David Kenney by her inclusion in the land passed on in common in David Kenney's estate.
Mary Jane was listed as a minor child of Nancy Kenney under 15 in the probate record of her estate on 5 Feb 1847. In addition, a payment was made to Robt. S. Crozier, identified as the guardian of Mary Jane.3
Mary Jane Kinney appeared in open court in Shelby Co., Ohio on 16 April 1847 and chose Robert S. Crozier as her guardian. The Court approved her choice and set bond for her guardian.4
Mary appeared in the census of 1850 in the household of her guardian, Robt. Crozier, in Loramie Twp., Shelby County, Ohio. She was 17, born in Ohio.5
In a Sheriff's sale on 1 May 1852, the shares of David Kenney's land in the NE1/4 S35 T11N R4E and the W1/2 S36 T11N R4E at Shelby County, Ohio, belonging to Mary Jane, Amanda, and Martha Kenney were sold to John D. Kenney, apparently to clear title for his sale of this land on 24 December 1851.6
Mary married John Gillaspie on 5 March 1853 in Shelby County, Ohio. John and Mary Jane had at least 3 children: Maggie B., b 1856; William H., b. 1859; and John F., born 1862..7
Mary Jane appeared in the census of 1870 in the household of her husband John Gillaspie in 3rd Ward, Piqua City, Ohio. She was 32, born in Ohio.8

Also a birthdate of 1838 would make her very young for her marriage in 1853..

FatherDavid Kenney b. c 1794, d. c Oct 1837
MotherNancy [--?--] Kenney b. c 1800, d. c 1846
Alfred H. Kinney was born on 17 April 1819 at Virginia.1,2,3
An unknown person was listed as the head of household in the Quadrennial Census of 1843 at Cynthian Twp., Shelby County, Ohio, in 1843. He was also listed in the 1847 Quadrennial Census of Shelby County in Cynthian Township..4
Alfred purchased numerous items in the public sale of his mother's estate on 23 Feb 1847.5
Alfred bought Lot 27 at Newport, Shelby County, Ohio, for $30 from Wm. Boykin and his wife Phebe on 23 October 1847.6 He sold Lot 27 to James H. Keplinger for $30 on 15 May 1848.7
A. H. Kiney is listed in the 1850 Census, in Cynthian Twp, Shelby Co., Ohio, at age 27, born in Virginia. He was boarding in a tavern. He also appears in the 1851 Census (apparently an Ohio Census, no image available).8
Alfred purchased a quitclaim from Margaret Ann Kenney for her share of the NE1/4 S35 T11N R4E and the W1/2 NW1/4 S36 T11N R4E at Shelby County from David Kenney's estate on 9 March 1850.9 He quitclaimed his rights and those he had purchased from Margaret Ann Keeney to the NE1/4 S35 T11N R4E and the W1/2 NW1/4 S36 T11N R4E at Shelby County, Ohio, from David Kenney's estate to John D. Kenney on 11 June 1851.10
Alfred sold land in Sec2 T8N R5E at Shelby County, Ohio, to Jackson Carrom on 17 December 1852.11
Alfred was listed in the 1870 Census in Twp 91, Rge 44, Plymouth County, Iowa. He was a farmer, age 51, born in Virginia, and living alone in the household..12

Alfred probably appeared in the census of 1870 in the household of his brother George Washington Kinney at 3rd Ward, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He was 50, born in Ohio. Although his name was given as Albert in the census, he was almost certainly George Washington's brother and aws buried in the same grave of George Washington's son.13
Alfred was listed in the 1880 Census in Big Grove Twp., Dist 217, Johnson County, Iowa.14
Alfred was listed in the 1900 Census in Washington Twp., Jasper County, Iowa. He was a retired farmer living alone, age 81, born in April 1819 in Virginia..15
Alfred died on 21 November 1907 at Iowa at age 88.16,3 He was buried in the Mitchellville Cemetery at Polk County.17,18

Albert Kinney

M, b. 1820
Albert Kinney was born in 1820 at Ohio.1

During the public sale of Nancy Kenney's estate on 23 Feb 1847, several items were purchased by an A. Kenny. Since many other purchases are listed for Alfred Kenny by name, it is possible that A. Kenny is the Albert Kinney listed with George Washington Kinney in the 1870 Census; Joseph Mendenhall was appointed Administrator of her estate on 29 Jan 1847 in Shelby County. Property was set aside for the temporary support of Mary Jane, Amanda, and Martha Kenny and an apparisal of the estate was completed on 5 Feb 1847. A public sale of the estate was completed on 23 Feb 1847 and final bills of the estate were paid. In addition to purchases from the estate by several of Nancy's children, a payment was made to John D. Kenney for hauling wheat to Piqua, indicating a probable relationship.2

An Albert Kenny was listed in the 1851 Iowa State Census at Pottawattamie Co..3

A Albert Kinney appeared in the census of 1870 in the household of George Washington Kinney in 3rd Ward, Des Moines, Iowa. However this person was most likely Alfred Kinner, brother of George Washington Kinney.4

John received a payment for hauling wheat to Pigua in the probate of Nancy (--?--) Kinney's estate on 29 January 1847 at Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio.4 John obtained the quitclaim rights of Alfred H. Kinney, including those Alfred had purchased from Margaret Ann Kenney, to the NE1/4 S35 T11N R4E and the W1/2 NW1/4 S36 T11N R4E at Shelby County, Ohio, originally obtained from David Kenney's estate on 11 June 1851.5 On 24 December 1851, John sold land in Section 36 of T11N R4E, at Shelby County, Ohio, to Charles Craft.6
As of 1 May 1852, John lived Shelby County, Ohio.7 At that time, he purchased the NE1/4 S35 T11N R4E and the W1/2 NE1/4 S36 T11N R4E at a Sheriff's sale. Apparently this was done to extinguish the claims of Mary Jane, Amanda, and Martha Kenney to their share of David Kenney's estate, possibly to clear title to John's earlier sale of this land on 24 December 1851.7
John D. Kenney and his wife Susannah sold about 36 acres in Section 36 and 11 acres in Section 35 T11N R4E at Shelby County, Ohio, to Henry Wolhover on 1 March 1853.8 On the same date John and Susannah sold 3.23 acres in Section 36 T11N R4E at Shelby Co., Ohio, to Simon Stoudt.9

John does not appear in any of the guardianship records following Nancy's death so he must have been born before about 1831.

George Washington Kinney

M, b. 5 November 1832, d. 23 March 1893
FatherDavid Kenney b. c 1794, d. c Oct 1837
MotherNancy [--?--] Kenney b. c 1800, d. c 1846
George Washington Kinney was born on 5 November 1832 in Beaver Township, Shelby County, Ohio.1

George was educated in the common schools in Shelby County.2 He purchased a fur cap in the public sale of his mother's estate on 29 Jan 1847 in Shelby County.3 Shortly thereafter, he was made the ward of John W Dye on 25 November 1848 in the Shelby County Court of Common Pleas.4

George moved from Ohio to Johnson County, Iowa near Solon in 1850.5

George was listed as the head of household in the 1854 Iowa State Census in Big Grove Township, Johnson County. Included in the household were 2 males, 1 female, 2 voters and 2 in the militia. Since this was before George's first marriage, it appears that he may have been living with a brother and sister, possibly Alfred and Margaret.6

George married Sarah R. Brown on 11 January 1855 in Johnson County, Iowa.7,8

George was listed as the head of household in the 1856 Iowa State Census in Iowa City, Big Grove Township, Johnson County. He was born in He was listed as a farmer, age 24, born in Ohio, lived in Iowa 6 years. Included in the household were his wife Sarah, age 21, born in Ohio, lived in Iowa 17 years; and their son Eugene, age 0..9

George was listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. He was 27, born in Ohio, and listed as a farmer with $300 property. Included in the household were his wife, Sarah (25, Ohio), his son Eugene (4,Iowa), and his sister Margaret (25, Ohio)..10

After Sarah's death in 1863, George married Elizabeth Phoebe Noyes on 1 November 1864 in Johnson County, Iowa. In addition to the listed children, George and Elisabeth probably had a daughter, Maud, who died on 4 July 1879 (per FindAGrave).11,12

In 1869 George moved to Des Moines where he was in the grocery business for several years.13

George was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census in 3rd Ward, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He was 36, born in Ohio, and listed as a grocer (ret) with $15,000 real property. Included in the household were his second wife, Elizabeth (28, IN); his sons Eugene (14, IA) and Charles (2, IA), and an Albert Kinney (50, Ohio) who was probably his uncle Alfred. Also in the household was Margaret Clark (22, Canada) listed as a dress maker with both parents of foreign birth..14

George bought the Des Moines Pottery in 1871 and ran it until it burned in 1873, resulting in substantial loss because he had little insurance.

After selling his interests in Des Moines, George moved to a farm in Section 26, Polk County, Iowa near Mitchellville where an old stage station was kept for many years. He owned 260 acres of land in 1880. He held several minor offices in the township and was a delegate to the State Convention since moving to the state. He was a member of the Christian Church for over 25 years.13

George was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census in Beaver Township, Polk County, Iowa. He was 46, born in Ohio, and listed as a farmer. Included in the household were his wife, Elizabeth (39, IN); his sons Eugene (24, IA), Charles (12, IA), and George E. (10/12, IA); a daughter, Mabel (9, IA); and a servant, Ellen Bartholomew (25,IN).15

George was listed as the head of family in the 1885 Iowa State Census at Beaver Township. He was 56, a farmer, born in Ohio. Included in the household were his children: Charles, 16; MD (Mabel Daisy), 14; Geo E. (George Ernest), 5; and EB (Eugene B.), 29. Also in the household were Eugene's wife, Maggie H., 22, and another women, Sarah Kinney, whose identity is uncertain. Sarah was listed as 43, born in New York. George's first wife was named Sarah but she died in 1863 and her grave has been located. This Sarah may have been a close relative of George living with him to take care of the children after the death of his 2nd wife, Elizabeth. But her birthplace of New York suggests that she may have been the wife of a relative..16

George was listed as a delinquent taxpayer in 1887 for 8.5 acres comprising Lot 13 in SWfr1/4 Sec 27 Twp 79 Rge 24. at Polk County, Iowa.17

George made a will on 15 March 1893 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He left one-third of his estate to his wife Mary; a gold watch to his son George E; and the remainder of his estate divided equally between his four children, E. B. Kinney, Charles N. Kinney, Mabel Slayton, and George E. Kinney. Charles N. Kinney was appointed Administrator.18

George died on 23 March 1893 in Des Moines at age 60.19 He was buried in the Mitchellville Cemetery at Mitchellville, Iowa.20,21,22

Biography of his son, Charles Noyes Kinney, states he was "born near Dayton, Ohio in 1835" . Census records for 1860, 1870, and 1880 imply birth dates from 1833-1834. Polk County Gravestone Record, Mitchellville Cemetery, show 1836 as does WPA Grave Registration for Iowa. A guardian was appointed for George in 1848 but no guardian was appointed in 1852. Assuming that guardians are required up to age 17, this implies that George was born after 1831 and before 1835. For now it is assumed that George was born in 1832 per the Polk Co. history and that his brother James was born about 1834. However, their respective bithdates could easily be reversed.
