William M. McKinley

M, b. 5 June 1767, d. 5 August 1850
FatherWilliam McKinley b. c 1740, d. 18 May 1824
William was born on 5 June 1767 at Carroll County, Maryland.1

William married Sarah Davidson circa 1795 at Sullivan County, Tennessee.2

In 1796, William was shown on the Tax List at Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was listed as one white man with no land in the poll list..3

William moved to Putnam County, Indiana in 1822.4 He purchased land in various tracts in Sections 5, 7, & 14 in T14N R3W at Putnam County from the Federal Government on 10 April 1824.5

William bought and/or sold land at Putnam County, Indiana, from 1830 to 1848. Most of these land transactions were in T14N, R3W, Sections. 5, 7, 14, 18, 23, 24, and 27. Much of the land was eventually sold to his sons, William Jr., John, and Abner..6

William was listed as the head of household in the 60-70 age group in the 1830 Census at Putnam County, Indiana. Included in the household were 1 female in the 50-60 age group (presumably his wife Sarah), 2 males 20-30 (presumably his sons James & Samuel), 2 males 15-20 (presumably his sons John & Abner), and 1 female 15-20 (presumably his daughter Malvina). (The relation between William McKinley in the 1850 Census in Lucas County, Iowa, and his designated children is purely circumstantial based on census data. Unfortunately 3 William McKinley's are listed in the Putnam, IN 1830 Census. One is clearly the son, William 1801. The other 2 have very similar family age groups headed by a man born 1760-1770. One set of age groups fit William 1765 exactly; the other set is close. It appears that these 2 William's must be cousins but the extra family group does not show up in 1840 or later..7

On 1 May 1833, William M. McKinley purchased 80 acres of land in E1/2 SE1/4, S36, T16N, R3W from the Federal Government.8

William was listed as the head of household in the 70-80 age group in the 1840 Census at Madison Township, Putnam County. Included in the household were 1 female 60-70 (presumably his wife Sarah), 1 male 30-40 (presumably his son James), 1 male 20-30 (presumably his son Abner), and 1 female 15-20 (probably Abner's wife or fiancee, Mary "Polly" Cradick).

A Wm. J. McKinly (presumably William M. McKinley) is shown in the Putnam 1845 Tax List with $1300 real property (Greencastle Twp, S14, T14, R4, 160 ac), and $400 of improvements. Also shown in the Greencastle Tax List are John and Abner McKinly, presumably his sons, with no real property..9,10

William was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in District 13, Lucas County, Iowa. He was 85, born in Tennessee. Included in the household was his son, James McKinley, age 45, listed as idiotic.11

William died on 5 August 1850 at Lucas County, Iowa, at age 83.12
