Hannah Jumper
F, b. before 21 October 1781
Father | William Jumper b. b 24 Aug 1740, d. 14 Jul 1814 |
Mother | Susanna Parsons b. 3 May 1748, d. 1 Mar 1811 |
Hannah Jumper was born before 21 October 1781.1 She was baptized on that date in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. She may have been named after the USS Hannah, the first armed vesel to fly the flag of the United States colonies.2,3
Hannah grew up in Joppa, afarmig community near Sandy Bay (later to become Rockport, Maine). When she was no longer needed on the farm, Hannah moved to Rockport where she earned her living admnistering to the sick with homemade remedies and by laundering and mending clothes.
On July 8, 1856, Hannah and a large group of women, upset by the men's spending on liquor, began going through the town and destroying its liquor supplies. In all, "Hannah and her Hatchet Gang" raided thirteen establishments during their five-hour assault, leaving hatchet marks on fifty barrels and destroying $700 worth of liquor. It was reported the men described Rockport as a mammoth punch bowl, with which the smell of rum drifted for two miles across the bay.
The sale of liquor in Rockport thereafter was prohibited until 2005 when a referendum was approved to allow
restaurants to serve and sell alcohol to customers who are having a meal.
Hannah Jumper's role in Rockport's "dry" status persists to this day in the current bumper sticker "Hannah Lives".4

Phelps Leach's biography of Lawrence Leach lists an undated marriage between Tryphosa and William Cordwell. Beverly VR, Vol. II, p.191 lists the marriage of a Tryphosa Leach to Nicholas Goldsberry on 21 Jan 1773 but this Tryphosa was only 14 at that time so it seems unlikely. Accordingly, will accept the Cordwell marriage as the most likely. Date of marriage estimated from birth date of daughter, Eunice.
