     John D. Flinn was born on 31 January 1821 in Mason County, Kentucky.1,2

John married Mary Kinsler on 13 February 1845 in Putnam County, Indiana. Although the family listings in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses are somewhat garbled, John and Mary appear to have had at least the following children:
- Bertha, b.1847 Indiana;
- Willoughby, b. 1849 Indiana;
- Sarah, b. 1851;
- John, b. 1852 Indiana;
- James(?), b. 1858;
- (Son), b.1860..3

John was listed as the head of household in the 1850 Census in Putnam County, Indiana. He was 28, born in Kentucky, and listed as a farmer with $600 real estate. Included in the household were John's wife Mary, 20 IN; a daughter Bertha, 3 IN; and a son Willoughby, 1 IN. Also in the household was a Willoughby Flinn, 29 KY farmer, probably John's brother.4

Samuel Chadd, George W. Vice, John Flinn, and William Kinsler are listed as heirs of Thomas Kinsler in an Agreement with his widow, Ellen, on 25 February 1852.5

In a Petition to Sell Land in Thomas Kinsler's Estate in 1853, John Flinn together with John Butler, is listed as the guardian of Susan Kinsler, daughter of Thomas Kinsler and Rebecca Reeves Flinn Kinsler. Rebecca was John Flinn's mother and Susan was his half-sister.5

John was identified as a heir-in-law of Thomas Kinsler in a petition to complete a land purchase in Putnam County, Indiana on 18 April, 1853.6

He was 41, a farmer living in Putnam County.8 He died in on 23 January 1879 at Fillmore, Putnam County, Indiana, at age 57.9,2 He was buried in the Shoptaugh Cemetery at Edgewood Lake, Putnam County, Indiana.2
