Thomas and Emily came to Kansas from Lucas Co., Iowa in 1882 in a covered wagon and homesteaded on a small farm southeast of Hutchinson in Reno County. They lived on the same farm in Valley Township from 1882 to her death in 1927.

Thomas and Emily took in three of the Smith girls (one died) when their mother, Ida May Leamon, died. The boys stayed with their father, Holloway Smith. When her other daughter Ava Maude Stanley died, Emily kept the baby, Eleanor, for about 2 years.

     Elzina Jane Logan was born on 14 August 1849 in Muskingum County, Michigan. Elzina was the daughter of Isaac Logan (1817-1882) and Elizabeth Baughman Logan (1824-1908). Her father and mother were born in Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively..^1,2,3

Elzina came to Ottumwa, Iowa with her parents when she was about 5 years old, locating on a farm near that place. In 1868 she moved to the home of her brother, John Logan, south of Russell and lived in that vicinity for the rest of her life.²

Lorenzo was listed as the head of household in the 1870 Census in St. John Township, Harrison County, Iowa. He was 37, born in Indiana, and listed as a physician. Included in the household were his wife, Martha (31, IN) and his daughter, Arrabel (12, IA.)⁵

He married second Amanda West in 1876 at Illinois. Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 (Ancestry) shows a photostat of a marriage between Mr Lorenzo Dow McKinley and Catherine Wheat on 10 Nov 1876 in Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri. Lorenzo died on 31 December 1903 in Marshall, Parke County, Indiana, at age 70.^1,2 He was buried in the Dodge Grove Cemetery at Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. There is some confusion here since a gravestone in Dodge Grove Cemetery is clearly inscribed as Amanda McKinley 1843-1924 and Dr. L. D. Mckinley 1831-1903. There is no picture of the gravestone for Lorenzo D McKinley but the double gravestone for Amanda and Dr. L.T. Mckinley looks very new and has the wrong birth date for him. It is probably a replacement for the original gravestone for both of them..⁶
