Daniel Jumper was born on 21 November 1764 at Gloucester, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1 He was baptized on 23 December 1764 at Gloucester.2

Daniel was indentured as an apprentice cordwainer or shoemaker to Jonathan Lane, mariner, and his wife, Esther on 19 April 1768 at Gloucester, Essex Co., Massachusetts. He was expected to serve until he was 21 years old on 29 November 1785. The indenture contract states "the said Apprentice his master and mistress well and faithfully shall serve...keep close, these Commandments lawful and honest every where he shall gladly obey: he shall do no damage to his said Master or Mistress...At Cards, Dice, or any other unlawful Game or Games he shall not play: Fornication he shall not commit: Matrimony he shall not contract: Taverns... he shall not haunt or frequent..." His Master and Mistress :Covenant and Agree to teach him to read, write and cypher" and to teach him "the Art, Trade, and Mystery of a Cordwainer or Shoemaker."3

Daniel enlisted in the Continental Army for 3 years on 1 April 1782 at Harrison, Cumberland Co., Massachusetts. He served as a private in the Company initially commanded by Lt. Myrick in Col. Sprout's 2nd Regt, Genl Patterson's brigade of the Massachusetts Line. He served until July 1784 when he received an honorable discharge from Capt. Simon Jackson who had commanded the Company for about 6 months. Although the homorable discharge was accidentally lost, his service was verified during the pension proceedings.4

On 28 August 1848, the Town Clerk of New Gloucester, Maine, certified that Mary Leach and Daniel Jumper had published their intention to marry on 2 September 1786 although he had no record of the marriage.5

Daniel married Mary Leach on 15 February 1787 in Bakerstown Plantation (now Minot), Cumberland Co., Massachusetts, (now Cumberland Co., ME), They were married in an unincorporated township by Rev. Samuel Foxcroft.

In addition to Daniel and Mary's identified children, there were 5 unidentified females born between 1804 and 1820 in Daniel's household in the 1820 census. 4 of these females were also listed in the 1830 Census..6

Daniel was listed as the head of household in the 16 and up age group in the 1790 Census at Bakerstown Plantation (now Minot), Cumberland Co., Massachusetts (now Maine). Included in the household were 1 male 16 and up (presumably Daniel), 1 male below 16 (presumably his son Joseph), and two females (presumably his wife Mary Leach and his daughter Mary)..7

In October, 1798, Daniel was shown on the Tax List at Poland, Cumberland Co., Massachusetts, (now Androscoggin Co., ME).8

Daniel Jumper settled near the head of Edson Brook near Harrison, Cumberland Co., ME in 1802.9 When Daniel and Mary moved to the Otisfield,/Harrison Twp area, the family came in an ox cart by way of Greeley Hill, past Capt. Anderson's and Dr. David Ray's, over Meeting House Hill and down Pinhook Hill and crossed Crooked River on a bridge of logs sided down. They lived first on the John Whitney place. They lived there 3 or 4 years and then moved on to the Enoch Brackett farm and lived there several years and then moved to the top of the hill, since called Jumper Hill (just north of Bolsters Mills village), lived there for about 40 years, and then moved into Bolsters Mills village.10 In 1805, Daniel was shown on the Poll List at Harrison Twp., Cumberland Co., Massachusetts, (now Cumberland Co., ME).

Daniel was listed as the head of household in the over 45 age group in the 1810 Census at Harrison Twp., Cumberland Co., Massachusetts (now Maine). Included in the household were 1 male over 45 (Daniel), 1 male under 10 (presumably son Daniel), 1 female 26-45 (presumably wife Mary Leach), 3 females 16-26 (presumably daughters Mary, Rebekah, and Ruth), 1 female 10-16 (presumably daughter Sarah), and 1 female under 10 (presumably daughter Anne)..11

Daniel was awarded a pension of $8/month beginning 11 April 1818 for his service in the Massachusetts Line during the Revolutionary War. Pension certificate 10,001 was issued on 27(?) April 1819.12

Daniel was listed as the head of household in the over 45 age group in the 1820 Census at Harrison Twp., Cumberland Co., Maine. Included in the houshold were 1 male over 45 (Daniel), 1 male 26-45 (presumably son Joseph), 1 male 16-18 (presumably son Daniel), 1 female over 45 (presumably wife Mary Leach), 1 female 16-26 (possibly daughter Ruth, Sarah, or Ann), 3 unidentified females 10-16, and 2 unidentified females under 10..13

Daniel was listed as the head of household in the 60-70 age group in the 1830 Census at Harrison Twp., Cumberland Co., Maine. Included in the household were 1 male 60-70 (Daniel), 1 male 20-30 (presumably son Daniel), 1 female 60-70 (presumably wife Mary Leach), and 4 unidentified females 20-30 (possibly his 4 daughters)..14

Daniel probably appeared in the census of 1840 in the household of his son Daniel Jumper in Harrison Twp., Maine. He was in the 70-80 age group. The census record identifies Daniel Jumper, age 76, as a Revolutionary War Pensioner. Daniel is also listed in the special 1840 Census of the Revolutionary War; 30-40.15

An 1871 Map of Sebaco Lakes Region (viewed at Harrison Public Library) shows ancestral homesites, including one for R(?) Jumper just outside Bolster Mills village. Area histories also have several references to Jumper Hill just outside Bolster Mills.16

Daniel died on 16 September 1841 in Bolsters Mills, Harrison Twp., Cumberland Co., Maine, at age 76.17 He was buried in the in Row 10, Bolsters Mills Cemetery at Maine.18
